VimpelCom makes first GSM VoIP call

Source: voipcentral.org

Though the news of the first experiment is about two months old, I got it now and it really has got me excited. In an industry first, Ericsson and VimpelCom, which operates Russia’s Beeline service, demonstrated 3GPP standard-based compressed speech and signaling (SIGTRAN) over IP in a commercial GSM network.

We know that speech compression over all-IP is the fundamental first step in the migration to an efficient IP network apart from the fact that it greatly reduces transmission requirements. In this case, this was made possible with Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch Solution.

Anyway, the first call was made in December 2005 between the Russian cities Nizhniy Tagil located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast in the Ural Mountains and Yekaterinburg, the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast.

This state of the art technology will be launched across the whole of this region in this month in Feb itself.
