Here’s Your Chance to Score Big in the AT&T Game Development Contest for Windows Mobile

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

AT&T, Microsoft Corp., HTC Corp. and I-play have announced the creation of the AT&T Game Development Contest for Windows Mobile to discover the next breakthrough mobile game.

Windows Mobile games represent the fastest-growing segment of the AT&T gaming business. The AT&T Game Development Contest, launching May 1, is truly unique as it represents the first time all members of the mobile gaming ecosystem are collaborating in an effort to inspire the developer community to take mobile gaming applications to the next level.

In a May 2007 research report, Gartner Inc. forecast worldwide mobile gaming end-user revenue to reach $9.6 billion in 2011 — up significantly from the $2.9 billion realized in 2006. Gartner attributes this projected growth in mobile gaming to consumer awareness and the increase in content being developed by gaming publishers. AT&T, which has the broadest portfolio of Windows Mobile phones of any U.S. carrier, currently offers more than 2,300 on-deck mobile games and is always evaluating innovative and entertaining gaming options to offer its 71 million-plus mobile customers.

Wanna Play?  Here’s All You Do:

AT&T makes it simple for its millions of customers to discover, shop and play games directly from their phones:

  • Look for the menu item called AT&T Mall or the MEdia Mall shopping bag icon.
  • Select Shop Games; you will see a list of categories such as New Arrivals, Top Sellers and a variety of genres that you can browse to find the game you want.
  • Select a game, then follow the prompts to purchase, download and install it onto your phone. (Standard data charges apply.)
  • Start playing!

Gaming developers can fill out the online entry form to submit their Windows Mobile compatible game. All game entries submitted during the next three months will be reviewed and judged based on the following criteria: game-play value and quality, game uniqueness and creativity, and marketplace potential. One grand-prize winner will receive a mobile game developer contract with I-play, prime placement of the finished game on the game portal on AT&T MEdia Mall and a cash prize of $25,000.

Prizes will also be awarded to three finalists and 10 semifinalists. For complete contest details, contest entry and prize structure, visit http://developer.att.com/gamescontest. The deadline to submit an entry is July 31, 2008. The winner will be announced at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2008 in San Francisco.

Skype 3.8 Out For Windows

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

Skype 3.8 is out and it features reportedly better video. I’ll have to check that out when I’m not on my Mac using version 2.6 as 2.7 for the Mac remains buggy.

A quick look at 3.8 today showed that Skype is working on making the Windows interface less cluttered and easier to get around.

Om has some insight.

Skype Releases Hotfix for Windows

Source: www.voip-news.com

Skype released a hotfix for Skype 3.6 for Windows that fixes several vulnerabilities in the software in its previous incarnation including a variety of bugs from wrong country flags to crashing problems. The hotfix also improves connection speed from restrictive network environments.

Perhaps the most important element of the hotfix is that it closed critical gaps that left the users computer vulnerable to hi-jacking. According to ComputerWorld:

In a security advisory issued Tuesday, Skype said it fixed the underlying flaw publicized by Israeli researcher Aviv Raff nearly three weeks ago. The vulnerability, which Raff called a cross-zone scripting bug, could be exploited with rigged video files that leveraged a security flaw in the way Skype rendered HTML.

At root, Raff said, was the fact that Skype, which uses Internet Explorer’s Web control to handle internal and external HTML pages, ran the control in a low-security mode.

Answer these six questions about VoIP IP Telephony!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

I found this bunch of questions on the PC World Site. I like where they are going with this and I wanted to post this and add my own answers before going about reading the article that this and the original post direct us to.

It will be interesting to see how I answer. (The red is my answers and once I read the original articles, I will post my thinking in blue. That is if that really matters.) Follow the links to see for yourself.

VoIP is hot. The Gartner Group predicts that by 2008, VoIP-enabled systems will account for some 97% of all systems sold. But all that heat can raise some issues. We resolve to answer some of the more pressing questions you might be facing.

Can I trust Microsoft with VoIP?

I don’t trust my computers with Microsoft. WGA and OGA
and I think it is better to keep what I wisper to my family and friends away fro Microsoft. May be some one else will listen in any case but I prefer it not to be Microsoft. (Don’t get me wrong, I grew up thinking Bill Gates was an idol among few other people. Now I have taken l out and added added a t)

What really happens when I dial 911?

It will reach whon it intent to be. The problem now is that incumbent big boys has the ownership of 911 and will not share (unless compensated!). Money will pass hands and it will work
Is VoIP safe?
As much as air you breathe and the Internet connection that you use to read this post. Do you think that old POTs lines were safe?

Do I need a $1,000 IP phone?

Not unless you are Britteny Spear, kidding! Just like your home phone, what do you want it to do will decide the price. Why pay $1000 for a phone.

Will SIP ever be ready for the desktop?

It is already and I am using it. I do not know what you mean by ready? if you expect it to have 8 cylinder engine no it will not but it is ready. (Was windows 95, windows XP were ready when they released? yet millions, including myself went about using it.)

How do I run my business on Skype?

Like you run your business right now. Make sure your backup is there (POTS line)

Solegy

The greatest advantage of open source VoIP application over proprietary is that the former offers the flexibility for organizations to modify the code as needed for specific purposes since the code is open.

Besides cost saving factor, the open source brings a strong security in the VoIP network than the closed source. Perhaps, it is the one of the reasons why the demand for open source VoIP will increase tremendously in coming days.

Here we have a familiar open source player Solegy, a provider of hosted VoIP software has announced the availability of its free Softphone that would operate on Windows.

Based on open source code, the Softphone supports SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) VoIP. It can be downloaded from Solegys website.

Compatible with hosted ServicePDQ platform, the SIP Softphone includes instant messaging, branded skins and account management features like available pre-paid balance, time left for call, real-time resource allocation, and delegated administration and one-click purchasing of additional credit.

The company claims the latest softphone integrates the iLBC, speex, GSM, and G.711 open-source codecs. It can also support proprietary codecs such as g.729 and g.723. The striking feature of Solegy softphone is that it has the ability to modify to bring IM client with present, customer branding and web page integration.

Linux And Windows tested again! over TCO

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Two research reports sponsored by IBM argue that Linux is less expensive to buy and operate than Windows or Unix.
Robert Frances Group study, titled "TCO For Application Servers: Comparing Linux With Windows And Solaris" and commissioned by IBM, compared the cost of acquiring, implementing, and running an application server on Linux, Windows, and Sun Solaris, it found that Linux is 40% less expensive than a comparable x86-based Windows server and 54% less than a comparable Sparc-based Solaris server. The Linux server’s costs were $40,149, compared with $67,559 for Windows and $86,478 for Solaris.
Pund-IT’s conclusions are based on lengthy research with three companies: Alliance UniChem, Boscov’s Department Stores, and Zahid Tractor & Heavy Machinery. Alliance UniChem CZ s.r.o. is part of Alliance UniChem plc., Europe’s second-largest pharmaceutical wholesaler, its third-largest pharmaceutical retailer, and the fifth-largest international player in its industry. The company began its SuSE Linux deployment in 2002 with a data warehouse and logistics system project designed to replace the existing Windows-on-Intel infrastructure.

Boscov’s, headquartered in Reading, Pa., and operating more than 40 department stores and outlets in five Eastern states, claims to have saved more than $2 million since its first Linux deployment on an IBM zSeries z900 server in 2001. Zahid Tractor, based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is a supplier of heavy and industrial equipment used in construction, manufacturing, shipping, the oil industry, ports, airports, steel works, and transportation that began its Windows-to-Linux migration in 2002 as part of an open-source strategy to improve IT flexibility, reliability, and security, the Pund-IT report says
