No More AT&T Callvantage?

Source: gigaom.com

AT&T, long before it merged with SBC had made a half-hearted attempt at getting into consumer VoIP by selling a service called, CallVantage. It was surprisingly good, especially its call quality. Unfortunately, the company never quite made the commitment to it. And when SBC merger happened, well it fell victim of save-your-mentality that comes with it. Today, there is word that AT&T has stopped pushing the service through its affiliate channels - a sure sign that the company is backing away even further and would shut it down soon enough. Some believe that shut down is going to come next year, though I thought it was already killed, since the former AT&T Callvantage boss is now running AT&T’s CDN business, and we have not heard a single pitch from the company in over a year. I guess this is one less thing Vonage has to worry about!

T-Mobile Launches VoIP Service

Source: www.voip-news.com

T-Mobile is getting in on the VoIP wave.

The company has launched Hotspot@Home, an unlimited calling plan where you use your existing broadband connection and a T-Mobile provided wireless router. The cost? $10 a month, if you have a qualified T-Mobile phone plan. Sorry folks with other wireless carriers - you aren’t eligible.

The wireless router will run you $50. And there is a $200 fee if you cancel the service before the contract is up. Other than that, it’s a bargain at $10 per month.

The service allows you to port your current phone number as well. And it includes the standard fare of voicemail, caller id, call waiting, call forwarding and 3-way calling.

I wonder how long it will be before the other wireless biggies begin offering similar plans as add ons . . .

New VoIP Service in Connecticut

Source: www.voip-news.com

Callers in Connecticut have a new option for phone service: AT&T U-verse Voice, AT&T’s brand of VoIP service. The digital voice service launched Monday for Connecticut residents. Customers can now combine all of their communication needs including wireline voice, wireless voice, broadband and television in the company’s IP triple play options.

AT&T U-verse Voice is a little different in terms of managed IP-based service. Instead of being delivered over the internet, it’s delivered over AT&T’s fiber network, which according to the company results in better sound quality and reliability.

“Consumers want their services to work together to keep them connected to their world, and AT&T U-verse Voice is another way we’re helping consumers do that better than anyone else,” said Chad Townes, AT&T vice president and general manager for Connecticut. “Just like U-verse TV has changed the way people watch television, U-verse Voice will change the way people use their home phone.”
But then, how is U-verse VoIP? The voice and wireless voice mail boxes are accessible both online and on traditional phone lines. It also features click-to-call functionality and Locate Me, which allows calls to simultaneously go to up to four wireless or landline phones.

Prices start at $30 a month. To learn more, click here.

VoIP in Romanian Style, Zapp Global Free

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Zapp today announced the launch of a unique VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) type of service that will enable Zapp customers to place and receive unlimited calls anywhere in the world directly from their mobile or FixTel terminal.

Zapp Global Free service is partly using the Internet allowing calls between PC to Mobile and Mobile to PC, and mostly addresses Zapp customers who want to stay in contact with people living abroad.

With Global Free, a Zapp subscriber gets unlimited internet calls, while their friends, relatives and business partners living abroad can call a Zapp phone in Romania for free. The fact that the service is enabled on the mobile or FixTel, without any software upgrade, and the internet application can be downloaded for free at www.zappglobalfree.ro makes the service very user friendly.

"Contrary to other VoIP services, which allow calls between PCs or fixed phones, this is the very first VoIP service available on a mobile phone in a user friendly way and for a very moderate fee." said Piermario Di Pietro, CEO Zapp.

Due to its advanced technology when designing the Global Free product, Zapp was able to maintain useful features and value-added services (voice mail, call waiting and divert, caller ID, multiple call handling etc.), all of which are absolutely free. This ensures that Zapp Global Free feels much like any of the voice services that the company currently has on offer.

The service is launched at a very attractive price: for only USD 4,99/month Zapp customers can make or receive unlimited calls, while the service is completely free for the internet users calling the Zapp customer.

"With Zapp Global Free we have created a unique communication tool that will benefit many Zapp users and Romanians living abroad. Calling international or calling from abroad to Romania, especially on the mobile phones, will no longer be regarded as expensive." added Di Pietro.

AT&T offers CallVantage phone service on trail basis

Source: voipcentral.org

AT&T is giving tough competition to local phone companies. AT&T is planning to tie up its publicized Internet phone service, CallVantage with its mobile phone service for three months on trail basis and provide this service at 14 AT&T wireless stores in Portland, Ore, and central New Jersey.

The company will provide the discount package on store kiosks and direct mail and online ads. AT&T Wireless users can add the CallVantage service for $19.99 monthly. If this trial goes well, the company will provide this service outside Southern US local regions.

After acquiring BellSouth, AT&T gave the company sole control of Cingular Wireless, which allows it to easily target customers in its Cingular stores. AT&T has potential to roll out this service and take the place of Verizon in New Jersey and Qwest and Verizon in Portland.

AT&T’s VoIP service will allow customers to make inexpensive phone calls while traveling through internet. Currently AT&T and Verizon, both are offering this service in their regions.

Stephan Beckert, analyst of TeleGeography said

AT&T is worried that the VoIP service would cannibalize sales of its more profitable land-line phone service in the Midwest.

While analyst of Yankee Group, Berge Ayvazian, said

AT&T can shake up the market by leveraging its fabled brand while using the package to cut monthly turnover of both wireless and CallVantage subscribers.
