AT&T’s Proposed Net Police and The VoIP IP Telephony

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Here is the video that brought up the issue of AT&T trying to be the net police that might hurt VoIP IP Telephony and Unified Communications due to inherent fact that it will slow down the network, disregarding the other issues that this brings out such as net neutrality. I am on an AT&T network because I have been happy with my services since I joined them in the days of Pacbell, about 20 years ago, and at least 12 years of broadband services.
I think the VoIP News has a very good article on this same issue so I will guide you over there. Here is the infamous movie made by Richard Blakeley, and Joel Johnson of Boing Boing doing the interview.

Now you seen the movie, here is the story at VoIP News.

Low Cost VoIP Solution, Rebtel Goes To China!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Rebtel, the people’s global communications company, today announced low cost and free international calling to and from China.

Starting Friday, December 21, residents of Shanghai can use their mobile phones to call any phone, anywhere in the world for just pennies per minute, and make free calls to friends, family, and work colleagues in 39 countries.

"Entering the Chinese market was not easy, but we’re finally in — just in time for ex-pats to call home for the holidays — and we plan to open service in more Chinese cities in the New Year," said Hjalmar Winbladh, Rebtel’s co-founder and CEO.

More than 18 million people live in Shanghai. And that doesn’t include the city’s 6 million migrant workers, making Shanghai one of the most populous cities in the world.

Rebtel’s low-cost calls from Shanghai to the United States, for example, will cost just $0.018 per minute; $0.019 per minute from the U.S. to Shanghai. By comparison, AT&T charges $3.50 per minute to call a mobile phone in China from a mobile phone in the U.S.

Rebtel calls from Shanghai will cost $0.019 to U.K. landlines, and $0.18 to U.K. mobile phones. Using Rebtel to call Shanghai from London will be the same as from the U.S.: $0.019 per minute. In contrast, Vodafone charges $3.33 per minute to call Shanghai from the U.K.

"There are more than 10 million mobile phone subscribers in Shanghai alone, so serving just a small percentage of that market should be a good test for rolling out service to the rest of the country," said Winbladh.

Rebtel services can be used with any mobile phone without modification or software downloads. There is no charge to set up a Rebtel account. All new comers get a free 10 minute call to test the service. Thereafter, subscribers only pay for the minutes they use. Smart Calls between the 40 counties served by Rebtel are always free and only one of the two people on a call must be a Rebtel subscriber.

University Uses Skype to Reach Every Student

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Tallina Ülikool, Talinn University (TLU) has done away with old form of lined notebooks and rickety desks and chairs, for teaching classes. The university which is also known as E-Stonia, (I know a quite a lot of university students that would love to be stonia state) they teach classes utilizing, yes the everyday VoIP IP Telephony tool, Skype.
Once the summer holiday destination of Tzars, Estonia is the center of academic activity now, due to the fusion of numerous university and research institutes such as the Tallinn Pedagogical University and the Estonian Academic Library.
Created within the ‘EU Phare’ project, the Masters course taught at this university is a joint program with the Finnish University of Tampere. So what is better about a trans-European collaboration for a trans-European program? Travelling to take some lectures in Finland and elsewhere would have been a big problem for Estonian students, so they used the technology available to solve the problem. If Skype has reduced the distance between friends spread all over the globe, business people in every country big and small, why not use the same for teaching?
Now the professors appear, not behind a lectern, but directly on TV, your computer, on any screen!. Furthermore the sessions are recorded and used for reference. So students do not feel really bad if the miss one lecture, it is easy to catch up!

I am very thankful all the people that helped me to reach this milestone. I will try my best in the future. May be next target is to reach a rank of 50,000! I know all these are volatile but with help from Sol@rion, I might be able to keep up.

Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon as well. May be this was inspired by the settlement Vonage did earlier with Sprint Nextel Company. I hope the can also address the AT&T lawsuit and move on to do real VoIP IP Telephony business.

Following is the news release;

HOLMDEL, N.J., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — In June 2006, Verizon Services Corp. brought a lawsuit against Vonage Holdings Corp. to enforce several Verizon patents relating to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.

In March 2007, a jury held that Vonage is infringing three valid Verizon patents. The jury awarded $58 million in damages. The trial judge subsequently issued an injunction which was stayed pending Vonage’s appeal.

In September 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the trial court’s decisions on infringement, validity, and injunction as to two of the Verizon patents (the ‘574 and ‘711) and remanded as to the third patent (the ‘880). Vonage filed a petition for rehearing which is pending in the Court of Appeals.

Today the parties have agreed to resolve the patent lawsuit. The terms of the resolution depend on how the Court of Appeals decides Vonage’s pending petition for rehearing regarding two of the Verizon patents (the ‘574 and ‘711). If Vonage wins rehearing on either the ‘574 or ‘711 patent or if the injunction is vacated as to the ‘574 or ‘711 patent, Vonage will pay Verizon $80 million. If Vonage does not win rehearing on either the ‘574 or ‘711 patent, or if the stay is lifted reinstating the injunction, Vonage will pay Verizon $117.5 million.

The parties are pleased to have resolved this matter.
