Could you imagine paying one - relatively low - price and having free VoIP calls for years to come? That’s what ooma is trying out with their new phone system. The unit is ooma’s latest release - a so-called free for life unit that promises free calling for as long as the unit works. It was unveiled in New York in early November.

Sound interesting? Well, it’s uber cheap today on Amazon.

Today, Black Friday only, Amazon is offering a ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills for $199.99. That’s $50 off the regular price. So, if you are in the market for VoIP, this could be a good deal to hop on. Ooma offers free domestic calling in the US, along with voicemail and caller ID. International calls are billed as being low-cost.

Internet cafes have been popping up all over Guyana. And at many of those cafes, customers can make cheap or free phone calls via services like Packet8 and Skype.

Well, the phone company and the government aren’t too happy about that. See, internet calls aren’t taxed, so that means the government isn’t making money off this practice. And since the phone company is losing money too, they two paired up to make a big stink.

According to the Associated Press:

Several countries have made moves to block or stifle phone calls over the Internet because they bypass taxation and local phone monopolies. Software that sniffs out phone calls has been used in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and China among others. U.S. regulators prohibit the blocking of Internet calls.

Looking to make VoIP calls from your iPod Touch? Well, you are going to need a mic…and headphones, too, probably. Fortunately, Griffin TuneBuds could be the answer to your VoIP search.

According to Wired:

The in-ear style TuneBuds cost $40, which is half what Apple is asking for its in-ear iPhone cans. More importantly, the Griffin headphones are available to buy, whereas Apple still hasn’t managed to make any of its new mic and remote equipped earbuds available yet. I should know — I’ve been trying to buy some for a month.
