General Dynamics Earns NSA Contract for Secure VoIP

Source: www.voip-news.com

The National Security Agency (NSA) has awarded a $2.8 million contract to add a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) feature to Sectera vIPer Universal Secure Phone. The feature allows users to use the vIPer Phone to connect to the traditional telephone network using a secure network.

“The idea behind PSTN Connect is to provide users with a flexibility they don’t have today. For example, the vIPer Universal Secure Phone will appeal to those whose installations currently use the PSTN network, but who plan to migrate to voice over IP; users who currently have voice over IP networks; and others who plan to stay with traditional PSTN,” said John Cole, vice president of Information Assurance for General Dynamics C4 Systems. “It’s about protecting our customers’ investments by providing a product that will accommodate evolving communications technologies.”

The Sectéra vIPer Phone was released in 2006 and is the only VoIP phone approved by the NSA for top secret information.

Fring Touting GPS Tracking IM Using Google Maps

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

I’m not so sure that using Fring is a good idea if you want any kind of privacy. While Fring’s privacy settings on the handset require enable you to switch the fringME! location feature on or off this whole idea of tracing someone’s movements is getting a little extreme. Since a lot of people pass phones around o show off their "toys" one moment you may be where you want to be, but don’t want anyone to know, and the next you will be tracked unknowingly when someone "configures" your phone.

In the end I wish these "tracking" technologies were like the 10 second beep when a call is being recorded. Let the user know its working when it starts and then every few minutes. You’d be amazed what something like that will stop.

Rob Thomas releases FreePBX 2.2.0B3

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

While thanking all the people who helped by downloading and running FreePBX 2.2.0B2, by sending in bug reports, Rob Thomas has released the next version of the FreePBX’s beta release, FreePBX 2.2.0B3.
He has stated that it is in the stage of release material but that he chickened out at last minute. I don’t think so, Rob is a very good developer and he wants assurance. Unlike "release now and fix later" type folks.
I have tried the FreePBX 2.2.0B2 and I am very happy with it. Did I find any bugs? Yes, but before I could report it at his TRAC site, someone has beat me to it!. I guess I am a slow tester or Rob has many followers that do due diligences.
I will upgrade one of my TrixBox, a brand new tiny little box, after the holidays. Too many of my friends have kids! Uncle Ravenii has to help them with choosing right gifts for the up coming holidays, and make their parents some what unhappy! So I an evaluating gifts with four kids now, while parents go and do the actual shopping.
Good luck Rob, I am waiting for official release, so that I can slap FreePBX on some of my clients that still running the old version. Of course after testing on my boxen.
