Source: www.voip-news.com

3CX has unveiled a free VoIP softphone for businesses.

Yes, free.

“3CX VoIP Phone is great for businesses that wish to have an easy to deploy, business-level VoIP soft phone. Because it is free, the usual hassle of administration of client licenses is avoided. The free editions of other VoIP phones do not have key features such as call transfer or the ability to put a call on hold,” said Nick Galea, CEO at 3CX.

The user-friendly phone allows users to review their call history, put calls on hold and accept, reject or ignore calls./

“VoIP Phones are an interesting option for businesses – they are easy to administer and environmentally friendly. Hardware phones require additional electricity, administration and desk space,” Galea said.

Avoid VoIP Blocking with SpeedVoIP

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

As VoIP business users in countries like Dubai are being blocked. Many users are turning to VPN solutions to allow the ability to use VoIP and get around the current blocking issue. This however is an expensive and unnecessary solution as SpeedVoip Technology able to resolve this issue. SpeedVoIP has released a betyter solution for Voip Blocking called VGCP (VoiceGuard Control Protocol) .

1. Overview

Yahoo messenger, Skype, Microsoft Messenger and Vonage offer a subscriber the ability to "call" someone using Softphone/Gateway ATA/IPPhone/IAD. However, several ISPs are blocking or degrading this service in order to force a consumer to use a ISP sponsored service. States such as the UAE block this technology outright while US corporations, such as Clearwire, claim that they might degrade the quality of competing services by adding choppy and delayed services.
SpeedVoIP is a leader in circumventing VoIP blocking imposed by ISP or Telco. For vision of Net Neutrality, VoiceGuard @ is created to address a growing number of ISPs who either degrade or block voice services over their networks. VoiceGuard @ gives choice back to the subscribers or customers of ITSP.

2. Technology

VGCP(Voice Guard Control Protocol)

VGCP is a proprietary layer 2 link protocol working at between IP stack and nic driver for VoIP anti-blocking. The core patent-pending VGCP is industry’s most state-of-the-art voice service provider class security protocol whose scalability and flexibility results in not to compromise voice quality and overhead. VGCP controls and monitors full voice signaling and media flow intelligently, meanwhile disguises sip and rtp packets into normal allowed data packets such as DNS and TFTP, and makes two-way encryption and decryption driven by user-customized policy. VGCP is fully transparent to upper SIP proxy or UA which means VoiceGuard can work with any 3rd-party Softphone/ATA/Gateway/IPPhone/IADs and SIP proxy or server not like some competitors which take effect on their own device and softswitch.

SidePass

Due to unique architecture, when deploying VoiceGuard Border Controller(VGBC) at customer CPE side, VGBC can work in the way similar to that of soho router, but it only encrypts and decrypts SIP and RTP packets on link layer, not to handup these packets to IP stack for forwarding while bypassing other data packets originating from SIP terminals. In this scenario, peak throughput and minimal CPU overhead can be easily achieved.

TrafficDisturb

Current leading carrier-class VoIP blocking platform such as NarusInsight can detect VoIP traffic with a special algorithm“traffic classification in the dark” which filters VoIP traffic based on behavioral-signature model. Compared with previous one of payload-signature model, NarusInsight is more sophisticated and robust. After deep study into traffic behavior of SIP UA, Proxy and Registrar, VoiceGuard can real-time incorporate light-weight traffic for puzzling and bypassing VoIP blocking system without consuming more bandwidth and compromising voice quality. Even in some circumstance, VoiceGuard can simulate traffic behavior of universal data networking protocol such as OICQ, MSN and so on.

3. Key Features

  • Maximum call completion rate and maximum voice service duration
  • SIP core standards and a variety of drafts supported
  • Proprietary link layer protocol for controlling
  • Any 3rd-party Softphone/ATA/Gateway/IPPhone/IAD and SIP Proxy/Registrar/SBC supported
  • The most comprehensive codec including g.711/g.723/g.729ab/iLBC/gsm/speechX supported
  • Bypassing Narus and Verso platform detection
  • Flexible user-customized encryption policy driven
  • Strict call path protection and security up to termination
  • Only simultaneous signaling/media/T.38 fax packet support across any firewall.
  • No network or firewall modification is required.
  • Excellent voice quality without any latency and performance compromise
  • Small footprint terminal SDK .
  • Available on all major platforms.

The greatest advantage of open source VoIP application over proprietary is that the former offers the flexibility for organizations to modify the code as needed for specific purposes since the code is open.

Besides cost saving factor, the open source brings a strong security in the VoIP network than the closed source. Perhaps, it is the one of the reasons why the demand for open source VoIP will increase tremendously in coming days.

Here we have a familiar open source player Solegy, a provider of hosted VoIP software has announced the availability of its free Softphone that would operate on Windows.

Based on open source code, the Softphone supports SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) VoIP. It can be downloaded from Solegys website.

Compatible with hosted ServicePDQ platform, the SIP Softphone includes instant messaging, branded skins and account management features like available pre-paid balance, time left for call, real-time resource allocation, and delegated administration and one-click purchasing of additional credit.

The company claims the latest softphone integrates the iLBC, speex, GSM, and G.711 open-source codecs. It can also support proprietary codecs such as g.729 and g.723. The striking feature of Solegy softphone is that it has the ability to modify to bring IM client with present, customer branding and web page integration.

Global Touch Telecom deploys T.38 Fax Support video over VoIP

Source: voipcentral.org

Global Touch Telecom Inc, provider of traditional and VoIP services, said that it is going to deploy a plug-and-play video-over-VoIP application, which will combine a video telephony and SIP software functions at GLOBALCOMM. GlobalTouch is working with Leadtek Research Inc., video maker company to develop the video phones and to overcome challenges of video signal handling.

The GlobalTouch platform offers two ways of making video calls:

1. Leadtek desktop phone
2. GlobalTouchs video softphone with its VoIP services

The softphone integrates with Microsoft Outlook Contact, which mean that if user has vediophone capabilities, directly initiate for video call by simply clicking on Outlook Contact. It will call as a normal voice-call only if user does not have a videophone. GlobalTouch said that it has developed software-only server side T.38 Fax support. It means that company can offer the double fax transmission speed and high level of transmission reliability to its customer. The International Telecoms Union (ITU) as real-time IP fax transport specifies the T.38 Fax protocol.

Companys fax in/out software resides on the VoIP server in the server side. Normally, servives providers will depend on third party for equipment of T.38-capable fax termination.

Gregory O. Welch, CEO of GlobalTouch said,

For business customers nervous about taking the VoIP plunge, our innovative, built-in T.38 fax makes a strong case for both home and business VoIP.

He told that the new use of T.38 fax protocol in expensive hardware boards, it offers more faster and reliable fax.

Highlights Of The Linux Softphones Review

Source: voipcentral.org

linuxLinux.com took a look at four Linux VoIP softphone clients and did some comparative analysis. The Linux softphones included Kiax, Linphone, Twinkle, and CounterPath’s X-Lite. Three of the four softphones use the standard SIP protocol with Kiax being the one exception - it uses Asterisk’s IAX protocol.

Excerpts from Paul Virijevich’s review at Linux.com

kiax dialerKiax

“… simple interface… major drawback for Kiax is its lack of SIP support.

Linphone

“….the grandfather of the bunch. Linphone is distributed only as source code; … Linphone also has a simple instant messenger application built in….Linphone’s biggest strength is its outstanding codec support….Despite the problems with upgrading, Linphone was otherwise rock-solid, as you might expect from a product that has been around for a long time.

Twinkle

“…the most ambitious of the group…..supports a long list of features and has the most professional feel of the open source softphones… comes with a few added services to simplify the user’s life. …. the Do Not Disturb feature …. it lacks an address book and call history reports, though these features are planned for future releases. Twinkle is definitely a softphone to keep your eye on.

CounterPath X-Lite

“…the only proprietary softphone of the bunch…. X-Lite’s biggest strength is the usefulness of its interface.”

The Winner?

Too early to say.
