AT&T Goes Social With "My Communities." Someone forgot to include FaceBook. Alan suggests getting an iPhone and doing social networking for free.

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

AT&T Inc.  has just announced  the launch of "My Communities," a new downloadable gateway that lets users create and manage multiple social networking accounts through a single dashboard view on their mobile phone.

My Communities was developed by Intercasting Corporation, a leading mobile social networking company. The launch coincides with recent data showing that a majority of social networking users maintain multiple accounts and that a growing number are maintaining their social networks primarily by using wireless handsets.

Uh….Where’s FaceBook?

At first glace this looks great, but digging deeper into this, even with MySpace, Xanga, LiveJournal and many more, FaceBook somehow fell off the face of this offering.

A few cool features though:

  • Through My Communities, subscribers can register for social sites directly from their phone without ever having to go to the Web, a feature not common with most other social networking applications
  • From an easy-to-use dashboard view, My Communities users can upload photos from their phone, view and respond to new messages, approve and deny friend requests and view and post new comments across multiple sites. Users can alternatively click to enter a specific site for a more customized experience. Updates are synched across mobile and online channels in real time.
  • Subscribers can also access their phone, camera, media gallery and address book while My Communities is running, which enables them, for example, to upload photos to use on one or more social networks and send site content to phone contacts without closing the application.

If you have an iPhone, you can download most free Social Networking sites and not have to pay for this type of service.

My Communities is available on more than 30 devices for a monthly subscription of $2.99. It can be downloaded from the AT&T MEdia Mall, accessible via AT&T handsets and online at www.att.com/mediamall.

My suggestion:  upgrade to the iPhone and get on any major social network for free.

VoIP meets online dating

Source: voipcentral.org

It is classy example to prove what VoIP can do for social networking and online dating activities. WooMe, which goes by the tag line meet 5 people in 5 minutes, has harnessed the power of VoIP technology to provide its members an effective means of communication.

At the very outset, WooMe is a unique dating site where users can crate their own sessions based on their interests. The sessions are aimed at providing live audio-video interactions to the users where they can share their varied experiences on different interesting topics.

The unique feature of WooMe is that it does not ask users to reply a number of questions or insist them to compile lengthy application form for registration. There is also no need to download any special software to run the application. It is simple and free.

At WooMe, you can develop personal relationship. For instance, you like a person after talking to him/her. You can get the contact detail of that particular person by paying just $1. However, the person must also interest in developing relationship with you.

Any way, its the cheap way to get your loved ones. All I can say the blending of VoIP in social networking can definitely make a difference.

jaxtr raises 10m vc

Voice has a voice. If it were not, the VCs would have not poured into the VoIP market in the light of recent hustle and bustle. According to media reports, Jaxtr has raised $10m in its first round of funding.

The Ex-Skype investors, Mayfield Fund, Draper Richards, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Mangrove Capital were among the investors who participated Jaxtrs first round of funding.

Way back in March this year, I reported here about Jaxtr when it first came to market. It has now more than one million customers. The achievement is mainly due to the fact that the Calif.-based company introduced a new wave of VoIP services bring social networking features for the users.

Jaxtr is a free service, using which you can make unlimited outbound international calls from your mobile phone and can make unlimited voice mails.

The company is in constant touch with the leading social networking sites including MySpace, Blogger, LiveJournal, Facebook, LinkedIn, Friendster, Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia and eBay to avail its services to their users.

Jaxtr breaches gap between VoIP and Social Networking

Source: voipcentral.org

jaxtr_28 A lengthy Tom Keating post on Jaxtr gives me an impression that both VoIP and Social Networking are now coming together to form a common platform for users to share their views, profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos. Its a healthy trend in the current voice market.

The launch Jaxtr public beta breaches the gap between VoIP and social networking. The use and application of Jaxtr is very simple, but versatile.

It is a free service, using which you can make unlimited outbound international calls from your mobile phone and can make unlimited voice mails.

Their site has these words,

With the free jaxtr service, users can link their phones with their online network to hear from callers worldwide while keeping their existing phone numbers private. And jaxtr is not just about hearing from people who visit a user’s profile or blog. By adding their jaxtr link to their email signature, global friends can call our users on their phone with the click of the mouse - without downloading any software, incurring international phone charges or even registering for jaxtr.

Jaxtr is in constant touch with the leading social networking sites including MySpace, Blogger, LiveJournal, Facebook, LinkedIn, Friendster, Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia and eBay to avail its services to their users.
