More VoIP Allowed in Wi-Fi Spots

Source: www.voip-news.com

This is pretty interesting. A UK publication is reporting that more Wi-Fi hotspots are allowing users to make VoIP calls.

According to Telappliant:

The report, by ABI Research, found that the Wi-Fi market is expected to grow by 40 per cent compared with 2007 and its business model has been changing rapidly.

It found that companies such as Starbucks have been altering how they look at the technology, for instance offering a virtually free service, meaning customers can take full advantage of the low cost of VoIP phone calls.

T-Mobile Hotspots Go Cold In New York City

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

Much to many people’s surprise this morning some of the always reliable T-Mobile Hotspots in Manhattan stopped working. It seems T-Mobile has a massive outage affecting the Big Apple this morning, and according to Hotspot support there isn’t any estimated repair time known yet.

The outage this morning that currently affects all T-Mobile Hotspot users in the Amtrak Penn Station, most of the Midtown Manhattan hotspots (i.e. Starbucks) and the Grand Hyatt. I found out as I’m affected by it when I exited my morning train to New York for meetings at Penn Station and was able to log on to the T-Mobile Hotspot but couldn’t go any farther. My call to Hotspot support confirmed what I suspected as I realized that when both the browser authentication and when the Blackberry Curve showed my devices connected to the hotspot, but then kept seeing the Curve seeking the UMA connection that something was amiss.

Well at least there will be some Boingo hotspots working in the city :-)

More UK Hotspots Get WiFi

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

It looks like BT’s OpenZone has added Starbucks rival Caffe Nero to their growing list of locations.

I’ve been in Caffe Nero and enjoyed their coffee more. Now I’ll have one more reason to linger around the storefront cafes when in London.

VoIP Backups Or Backup For VoIP

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

I read about backup for VoIP on a leading Magazine today. One of the backups it suggest is that to keep the good old copper wires, PSTN, and that is what I am doing, at office, home office and home.
They also suggested and I also have UPS backups fro my routers, DSL routers and VoIP switches.
Our Asterisk Servers are protected and our VoIP Phones, a mixture of Cisco, Linksys, Astra, Avaya and Grandstream phones also protected by UPS, over POE.
I even have a Solar Power system at Home and home office. System runs well with most of the time sending excess power to the grid.
But with all these systems, I have lost VoIP service, in two incidents when we lost power in the area, we lost our phone service. But our office and home was well lit.
Why? because the central switch (Belong to service provider) that our DSL service came from also lost power. So only service we had was good old POTS service, and our cell phones, iPhones.
I do not have cable service but I am not sure if they also connect to central switches. And if they do, it will be the same picture, your area loose power, you get no VoIP.
So make sure that you have at least one pots line with a old type phone and well charged cell phone.

Does your Phone work During a power outage?

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

You may be used to pickup your phone at anytime and be able to hear dial tone. That is to some people is a God given right!
I still have an old phone (one that does not require power connection, other than being connected to the POTS, Plain Old Telephone Service, line) for calling someone during a power outage. It sits proudly among all these expensive phones, including VoIP. I do have Battery Backups for my Phones, My Modems(DSL) and Network Gear. But sometimes it happens that everything works in my house but the DSL service. So I have to use my regular phone service.
Why did I write about this? Because I realized that it might be a problem to most people with new phone services. It could be DSL with VoIP, Cable Service with VoIP, Skype, or Vonage like service. But they might not work as they used to, when you had a POTS line only, during a power outage.

But instead of me telling you how to cope, let me direct you to CalPhoneInfo.com’s article on the same subject. Although the site is created to support Californians, most of the information is universally adoptable.

Here is little description of CalPhoneInfo;
CalPhoneInfo is a consumer education initiative created by the PUC to help our state’s consumers understand the changing competitive market of telecommunications services and provide assistance with filing complaints on phone matters.

The consumer education initiative is the brainchild of a California Public Utilities Commission proceeding that evaluated what consumer protections and rights were sensible in the changing phone market. Out of that proceeding came a new CPUC general order specifying the utility regulations (General Order 168) and a new emphasis on consumer education and enforcement.

POTS on Crack = Windows on VoIP

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Or is it VoIP on Windows?
Have you seen POTS (Plain Old Telephone)s gone to crack? Just try VoIP on Windows says Robert L. Mitchell of Computer world!
"Relying on a soft client running on Windows as my sole resource for making important calls has been a recipe for disaster. Plain old telephone service may be old fashioned, but you know what? With POTS, 99% of the time the phone just works. The same can’t be said for my current voice over IP setup, which I am relying on in my new office."

This is just a client, imagine running all routing switching and rest of the stuff that VoIP sytem does. Microsoft has even added more than just VoIP, to it’s Communications solution, aptly named unified Communications for OCS 2007

Answer these six questions about VoIP IP Telephony!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

I found this bunch of questions on the PC World Site. I like where they are going with this and I wanted to post this and add my own answers before going about reading the article that this and the original post direct us to.

It will be interesting to see how I answer. (The red is my answers and once I read the original articles, I will post my thinking in blue. That is if that really matters.) Follow the links to see for yourself.

VoIP is hot. The Gartner Group predicts that by 2008, VoIP-enabled systems will account for some 97% of all systems sold. But all that heat can raise some issues. We resolve to answer some of the more pressing questions you might be facing.

Can I trust Microsoft with VoIP?

I don’t trust my computers with Microsoft. WGA and OGA
and I think it is better to keep what I wisper to my family and friends away fro Microsoft. May be some one else will listen in any case but I prefer it not to be Microsoft. (Don’t get me wrong, I grew up thinking Bill Gates was an idol among few other people. Now I have taken l out and added added a t)

What really happens when I dial 911?

It will reach whon it intent to be. The problem now is that incumbent big boys has the ownership of 911 and will not share (unless compensated!). Money will pass hands and it will work
Is VoIP safe?
As much as air you breathe and the Internet connection that you use to read this post. Do you think that old POTs lines were safe?

Do I need a $1,000 IP phone?

Not unless you are Britteny Spear, kidding! Just like your home phone, what do you want it to do will decide the price. Why pay $1000 for a phone.

Will SIP ever be ready for the desktop?

It is already and I am using it. I do not know what you mean by ready? if you expect it to have 8 cylinder engine no it will not but it is ready. (Was windows 95, windows XP were ready when they released? yet millions, including myself went about using it.)

How do I run my business on Skype?

Like you run your business right now. Make sure your backup is there (POTS line)

Get your CIT310, a phone with Yahoo inside

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

If you were misinformed that Skype is the only free/non free service in the VOIP IP Telephony arena, yes, you were mis informed. Yahoo messenger also allows you to talk to your brother in up stairs room and your uncle somewhere in New York. Also you can call land lines if you have subscribed to Yahoo Phone out.
So what does Company like Yahoo do with a service like that, it joined with Linksys to make your life easier. Since most VOIP users still rely on POTS (Plain Old Telephone) line to call when VOIP is not satisfying, Yahoo and Linksys have teamed up to create a dual-mode cordless phone that gives user the ability to toggle between VoIP functionality and a traditional land line.
Dubbed the CIT310, the phone has a small color display and users will receive 100 free minutes yahoo phone out when they sign up for the service.
Today it was around $79.00 at amazon.
You can get more info about Yahoo phone, Yahoo Phone out etc at Yahoo voice site. If you do not have a Yahoo account you can get one there too. But who did not have a Yahoo messenger account!
