Update to boxee and updates regarding Hulu on boxee

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

boxee has just released a new version with the "App Box" (their version of the App Store), an RSS reader optimized for video feeds (including Hulu, Google Video, YouTube, and many others), and a long awaited auto-update feature.  These features are included in boxee for Mac, AppleTV, and Windows (I was told that they will send out an update when Linux is available).

There is also an update with regards to our meetings with Hulu and their content providers below.  Sadly, they weren’t ready to work with them yet.  When they are, they look forward to bringing a more robust version of the Hulu application back to boxee with their help.

You can download the latest version with the app box for Mac here: http://apt.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.9.5324.dmg
Screenshots of the new build are available at http://drop.io/iloveboxee

The following is posted at the boxee blog http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/03/06/new-version-hulu-update/

boxee was  started because there was an opportunity in the media center space for a product/company who put the user first, while respecting the rights of content owners. Over the past year and a half, they’ve listened to users, content owners, investors, working to create that platform.  While I very happy with my traditional U-verse services, boxee expands its capabilities — and to some degree illustrates a true disruption that big telecos and cable companies face.

Like many great product and technology breakthroughs, these guys did not come from an entertainment or cable background. The fact that it’s becoming easy to consume Internet video on a TV brings into question many of the industry’s business models that developed before the web. That’s part of the reason why Hulu asked to be removed from boxee. our meetings over the past week weren’t able to change that. but the people in the industry “get it”. they are users. they read the blogs. they talk with users. they are trying to adjust to a new reality, but they need time.

Users on the other hand, won’t wait. As seen over the past few weeks, users will take matters into their own hands to get the content they want.  Witnessing this, the boxxee team decided to enable access to a user’s favorite content using a new built-in RSS reader optimized for video. Like IE, Firefox, or Google reader, the RSS reader supports Google Video, Yahoo!, YouTube and feeds from many other websites. while it’s not as attractive or robust as our previous Hulu application, it will additionally support Hulu’s public RSS feeds.

The extended support for RSS is part of a new version of the boxee alpha (no update for Ubuntu, yet). it includes two new features that are still under development:

  • App Box - this is a first take at an application “store” that makes it easy for users to install new apps and plugins. there is also native support for 3rd party repositories, so you don’t have to rely on boxee as a gatekeeper for what goes into the official boxee app store. for example, you can add dir.boxeehq.com as a repository to get access to all the boxeehq.com apps.
  •
  • auto update - long time in the making and really bad form on our part for not having it from the beginning. but better later than never. no need to check on Twitter or our blog to know that there is a new version. now you’ll be prompted to update boxee whenever there is a new release ready.

This is a bleeding-edge release. not for the faint of heart since it did not go through much testing. I was told that the company is on track to release a more stable update on March 24th.

Wyse Releases Updates

Source: www.voip-news.com

Wyse Technology has released several updates to the Wyse virtualization software suite. The updates are TCX USB Virtualizer(TM) 2.0, TCX Multi-display(TM) 1.2, and TCX Rich Sound(TM) 1.0.

“As desktop virtualization and cloud computing continue to gain momentum, Wyse thin clients are setting the standard for end user experience at the desktop,” said Jeff McNaught, Chief Marketing Officer for Wyse Technology. “However, this enhanced experience can come at a significant price — larger datacenters to process the richer data. Wyse saw this trend years ago, and developed collaborative processing architecture (CPA) that intelligently divides the workload between the server and client, reducing the need for larger servers, while delivering the best thin client experience yet. Today’s enhancements further assure CIOs and IT administrators that end users can successfully access and run rich cloud-based applications at the highest fidelity and with the greatest experience — without forcing tons of additional infrastructure.”

According to Wyse:

CPA is built-in to the Wyse virtualization software suite that works with Wyse thin clients and the Citrix(R) ICA(R) and Microsoft(R) RDP protocols to significantly improve user experience. Unlike protocols that replace ICA or RDP, Wyse’s approach adds functionality, but shifts the processing workload to the client CPU when appropriate. Competing thin clients with small or no client CPU either can’t handle multimedia, or often require a special protocol to deliver it, but typically use the datacenter CPU to render video or sound content. That architectural approach slows performance for all users, and requires the purchase of additional cloud server infrastructure to correct.

Microsoft isn’t the only one with an update out. TalkSwitch just released TalkSwitch management software 6.10 in the UK & Ireland.

According to TalkSwitch:

The free software update offers TalkSwitch users new features for enhanced call handling flexibility and increased productivity, including the ability to integrate with multiple Internet Telephony Service Providers, with fail-over to PSTN for added security, plus more extensive diagnostic capabilities to simplify VoIP deployment.

In addition, users will notice a dramatic new Java-based graphical user interface that enhances the intuitive configuration experience, provides extensive help messaging for guidance, and makes installations even simpler.

“This software makes setting up and configuring a TalkSwitch system a snap,” said Jan Scheeren, President and CEO, TalkSwitch. “And our customers are going to love the new things we’ve added in, such as the ability to take advantage of the offerings from multiple service providers. Software 6.10 gives unprecedented flexibility and control and further establishes TalkSwitch as the right choice for small businesses.”

March Madness Update

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

Jeff Pulver’s post reminded me that I need to make it easier to be found in this mad month of March.

Next week is eComm. Be there or be behind the curve of what’s really emerging in voice, video and real time communications. There’s also the IDG Voice Summit on Tuesday which I hope to make part of it after a client meeting in the morning.

The week of March 17th is VON. VON is the Mac Daddy of voice shows and has the mainstream players plus the Carl Ford/Thomas Howe/Jeff Pulver Unconference.

End of month has me at Electronic Telespan in Las Vegas, just before CTIA starting April 1…

Level 3 Layoff Update

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

I had a call last night from on of my friends who is no longer with Level3. I continue to be amazed how the company can start to grow and then shoot themselves in the foot.

The idea of loyalty to employees is not in the company’s DNA as people who have significantly helped correct the company were all basically moved out.

What is going on is the same kind of brain drain we’re seeing at Intel, HP, Dell and elsewhere. Basically people are hired to make the company look good, or promoted. Once they get the company to where they need to be, then the axe falls.

Heck of a way to run a business, but I guess that’s the way the Crowe flies in Broomfield.

Wednesday Round-Up: Cisco Updates, Trouble at VoIP Inc., Manifone

Source: www.voip-news.com

Internet Storm Center warns that it’s time to update IP phones. Cisco Unified Communications has released a number of critical security updates to close-up vulnerabilities. Find out more here.

What message exactly is VoIP, Inc. trying to send to shareholders these days? LucaFiligheddu has an idea. Read about it here.

The VoIP Weblog looks at Manifone, which has a similar model to Jajah (which inevitably makes me picture Jar-Jar Binks. That’s what it sounds like in my head. Jajah, not Binks.). Click here to read it.

Trixbox 1.1 and an update released!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

If you were an asterisk@home fan, now it has become trixbox! So they have a new site but the sourceforge site is the same (asterisk@home).
What ever they do, they are doing a better job each time. If you are a developer/user (may be other way around) this is a site that must be on your list. Click on the header to go to their news site.
Here is the release note from the site;
trixbox 1.1 released today. The only new feature is Munin a system monitoring package. There are tones of small fixes. Zaptel and conferencing should be working. The latest SugarCRM is included. I will try to get a 1.1 upgrade script ready for next week but 1.0.3 that installs from the upgraded script now should have all the conferencing and zaptel fixes.
All of the non opensource packages have been removed from the ISO so if you use HUDlite you will need to type install-hudlite from command line.
The update news is here;
The new 1.1.1 update is available just type Âtrixbox-update.sh update from the command line. This update adds all of the 1.1 functionality and also adds PHP 4.3.11 We were having a lot of problems with SugarCRM because the version of PHP that comes with CentOS is not supported by Sugar.
