OOMA P2P VoIP device on sale

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

As we reported a while ago, the Ooma peer to peer VoIP service and unique device is slated to go on sale today for $399. The device plugs into your broadband connection and uses a peer-to-peer architecture to dodge termination fees and offer free voice calls. Users can buy $39 "Scout" devices that extend the system to each phone jack.
May be because of the co founder and movie star Aston Kutcher’s involvement service might get a jump if there is any connection between actors and VoIP. But slated YouTube (utube) promotion will certainly help.
Just like Skype, OOma is based on peer to peer technology and the success of the service vastly depends on the number of devices out on the wild. So far there is about 2250 devices are out there. If the service needs supernodes!, like skype, we are not sure of who is handling the supernode service, Ooma or the users them selves.
More information could be found at Ooma site.
Just to remind you that if you do not care about actors and want to save $300, you might want to look at PhoneGnome, a similar service.

JoIP, a new VoIP service from Panasonic and Deltathree

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

JoIP is a new twist in telephony communications solutions, a joint effort by industry leaders Panasonic and deltathree. Bringing POTS and VoIP in to single device.

JoIP is a service enabling users to enjoy two different worlds of communication that exisit today, the “plain old telephone service” or POTS and the exciting new world of Voice Over IP or VoIP. With joip, you can benefit from your regular phone line and a next generation joip free line and number provided when you buy the phone and register. You do not need to have a computer to enjoy the new service. So what is the catch? Yes you need a phone, from Panasonic marketed under the name GlobaRange GlobaPhone.

Although the concept is not new, the use of P2P technology makes a difference. Just like popular Skype Service.

The Globaphone costs from $99.95 to 129.95 depending on the model. My current POTS phone is a Panasonic phone san the VoIP and I am very Happy with the phone. From experience, I am sure Globaphone will be of no difference, a reliable hardware piece.
Using the joip line, you can make and receive free calls to and from any other joip number in the world, creating a huge — and free — communication community. With joip, family members in different countries can now talk as much as they like for free provided that they all use Globaphone.

Skype, Yahoo! collaborating for mobile network!

Source: voipcentral.org

It is just like a foe-turned friend situation. The grapevine has it that the two traditional rivals, Yahoo! and Skype are collaborating to develop a mobile network using the 700Mhz spectrum. No doubt, the network will be based on 3G, WiFi or VoIP technology.

It is no more surprising to see both the giants joining hands to explore the VoIP potentiality since Skype has a global community for its P2P VoIP, while Yahoo! for IM services. The combine force will bring a huge subscribers base for the wireless phone or broadband services that they are planning to do.

Andy has an interesting revelation on the Yahoo-Skype partnership. He says in his blog,

Given how Yahoo and Microsoft are partners on IM. And how Yahoo and the iLecs/RBOC’s are partners on access, and how Yahoo Messenger with voice has been soft peddled by “Skippy”-Brad Garlinghouse and the “Rock Star”-Jeff Bonforte in the direction of the DSL partners to not erode market share, but there for the RBOCs when they want it.

Adobe acquires another VoIP company

Source: voipcentral.org

adobe-acquires-antepo_28California-based Adobe Systems has moved a step ahead in the P2P market by acquiring yet another VoIP company, Antepo this week.

Antepo, Inc is widely recognized as the developer of Antepo Open Presence Network (OPN) System for Enterprise Instant Messaging and Presence capabilities.

The Antepo technology provides real-time communication and collaboration fulfilling critical business requirements for control, security, integration and compliance.

The Antepo technologies will be integrated in the Adobe Acrobat suit to enable knowledge workers to communicate and collaborate with confidence.

Earlier, we have covered here a major story on Adobes ambition in P2P market. In the story, there has been special reference to Adobes acquisition of Amicima, a company that develops enhanced Internet protocols for client-server and peer-to-peer networking.

With two acquisitions, Adobe now plans to spearhead in the both VoIP and Video market.

Fring MVoIP supports both Gtalk and Skype

Source: voipcentral.org

fring-mvoip_28We have some updates on Fring, which ensures P2P 3G VoIP services to different mobile phones. The popular program has now functionality to allow its users to talk with both Skype and Google Talk users.

Andy made a different analysis on Fring while saying,

This is interesting because Skype seems to have abandoned efforts for the time being to be in the mobile market. For months we’ve been hearing that there was going to be a Symbian Skype client but at CES I heard this was far from close to happening, something that has Symbian fans scratching their heads.

Despite forming a global community for its P2P VoIP, Skype is still reluctant to get into MVoIP. On the contrary, Fring sees new opportunity in mobile VoIP applications.

The main features of Fring include: VoIP services without WiFi, Support Skype-like P2P VoIP, operates on 3G data network, Simple installation and no air-time charge, Full-duplex voice quality and user friendly application.

As of now, Fring supports a number of Nokia phones including N70, N72, N80, N80i, N90, 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682.

Adobe sees future in P2P

Source: voipcentral.org

abode-in-p2p_28 California-based Adobe Systems is entering into P2P bandwagon with its recent acquisition of Amicima, a company that develops enhanced Internet protocols for client-server and peer-to-peer networking.

US-based Amicima is famous for its amiciPhone2, a p2p supported VoIP client. It integrates presence, text messaging and file transfers with voice chat.

The two companies have announced their partnership at the CES Show 2007 in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, it did not get much coverage.

It is more or less apparent that they will be joining forces to integrate new versions of next generation media technologies leveraging VeriSigns Kontiki P2P technology and Adobes Flash Video software. It means they are targeting both VoIP and Video market.

Raketu prepares new strategies to challenge Skype

Source: voipcentral.org

raketu-with-new-strategies_28

I have admitted Raketu as one of the Skype killers in todays VoIP market.Based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Technology, Raketus communication services include dial out calling (rakOut) to landline phones as well as mobile phones, Instant Messaging (supporting Raketu, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, ICQ, Google and Skype), SMS-text messaging and file transfers and sharing.

To compete Skype, Raketu had announced Try Dialout For Free promotion and Unlimited calling offer two months ago. These offers were similar to Skype offers, though Skype is ending its free offers from next year.

Robert Poe has made here a good revelation about Raketu. He says the New York based VoIP set up will kick off a big marketing and PR Push in early 2007. Raketu is introducing Windows Mobile and Mac versions.

So, shall I conclude Raketu preparing ground to compete Skype?
