T-Mobile introduces

Joining in the on-going VoIP WiFi race, Deutsche Telekoms subsidiary T-Mobile has introduced its latest Wi-Fi calling service HotSpot@Home this week.

Currently, the HotSpot@Home is under trial in Seattle with a group of about 300 users. T-Mobiles Wi-Fi calling service facilitates subscribers to make free phone calls using their at-home WiFi network or from public WiFi hot spots.

As of now, this service is available for the Samsung T709 and Nokia 6136 dual mode phones.The price of both the phones is fixed at $49.99 for a two-year contract and unlimited Wi-Fi calling costs $19.99 per month over the price of a T-Mobile voice plan. The entire service comes with a free, re-labeled D-Link 802.11g Wi-Fi router.

Another striking feature of the HotSpot@Home service is its UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) technology that brings flawless handover between WiFi and mobile calls, so as the users can easily switch over to different networks without missing calls.

Are mobile phone companies recognizing the presence of VoIP?

Internet telephony over mobile phones took centre stage at the 3GSM World Congress mobile phone conference held in Barcelona last week with two announcements that signaled that mobile phone industry is waking up to the potentially disruptive technology coming their way.

On Monday Nokia chief executive, Jorma Ollila said; ‘Internet voice is going mobile’, as the worlds biggest maker of mobile handsets unveiled its first mass- market model capable of supporting voice-over-internet protocol. VoIP is the emerging technology that offers cheap calls to users by routing them over the internet, instead of traditional phone networks.

Nokia unveiled its Nokia 6136 which is a dual mode phone that works on GSM networks and can also connect to small wireless networks known as Wi-Fi On the other hand Motorola has been working on similar handsets and companies like Compaq and HP have been working on pocket devices that would support both VoIP and Wi-Fi. Skype has already entered into an agreement with Hutchison Whampoas mobile last week. Is VoIP going to dominate the future? Lets see!!

Nokia goes the VoIP way with new handset

VoIP gaining mass market got a big boost as Nokia unveiled plans for its new phone with VoIP capabilities.

The Nokia 6136 was unveiled yesterday that has features that were currently not available in any VoIP, GSM or CDMA handset. It switches switches automatically between the Internet and standard cellular networks.

Kai Oistamo, an executive VP at Nokia which is the world’s top cell phone maker, quipped The Nokia 6136 mobile handset can deliver an easy-to-use seamless communications experience in virtually any situation.

I am sure this is a really big step indeed with a popular mobile maker embracing VoIP and offering seamless communications experience between VoIP and other networks.
