iPod Touch and VoiP vs. iPhone

Source: www.voip-news.com

A simple comparison, now that the new iPod Touch has a microphone and there is at least one working VoIP application to use with wifi. For the purposes of this comparison I am going to skew every single decision in favor of the iPhone as much as possible.

But first, the VoIP calling details. Fring has a free iPhone/iPod Touch app in the Apple app store that is smart, can call via Skype and via several SIP clients and knows enough to offer you all available calling options (including cellular on an iPhone). The significance is that with a global Skype Out plan you can call pretty much anywhere in the world for very very little. Note that you cannot use the VoIP calling portion over 3G – so outside wifi range you are going to have to make cellular calls and pay the freight.

Price

iPod Touch

$229 (for 8GB model)

Total - $229

iPhone WITHOUT plan (buyout)

$199 plus $18 fee plus $30 first month (as far as I can make out in the legalese you are stuck with the first month no matter what you do) plus $175 buyout. Note that this gets you an iPhone with no cellular capabilities – essentially an iPod Touch with a camera. Of course, if the plan is to switch to another carrier, then this is likely your way to go.

Total - $422

iPhone WITH plan

$199 (for 8GB) plus $30 per month (for two years) plus one time $18 upgrade fee. I am not including the cost of the cellular plan since I will assume that it is replacing my existing plan.

Total - $937

Feature Differences

Ipod Touch

Our baseline.

iPhone WITHOUT plan

Has camera.

iPhone WITH plan

Has a camera. Can make cellular calls and access the data network from anywhere 3G works – a significant amount more than any wifi coverage.

What does this mean? First – despite a few heated comments on bulleting boards and forums, it is a complete waste of time to buy out of an AT&T iPhone contract unless you are moving it to a different cellular plan.

Second. If you spend most of your time near wifi, you can save yourself over $700 by buying an iPod Touch and using Fring. Just don’t expect it to be more than an iPod outside of wifi range.

Thanks to WiFi Smartphones, Mobile VoIP is Growing Steadily

Source: gigaom.com

Business Week today has a good summary of various mobile VoIP services that allow you to make phone calls from your cellphone over the Wi-Fi network. These apps are incredibly popular amongst people who use iPhones, thanks to services such as Truphone and Gorilla Mobile, while others like iCall will soon join the party. And that is just the beginning.

By 2011 the number of mobile VoIP users around the world may rise to 100 million from 7 million in 2007, according to ON World, a consulting firm based in San Diego. ON World estimates that in 2011, mobile VoIP voice services may generate $33.7 billion, up from $516 million in 2006, the most recent year for which the figure is available.

WiFi-based voice calls may not appear to make much sense in this era of $99, flat-rate unlimited plans, but when you have to make a lot of international long distance calls, the cost saving are humongous. I use Truphone on my iPhone and/or my Nokia e71 to make calls to my family and friends in India as well as to my sources, which are spread across the world.

There are times when I have used Skype (via iSkoot) on my mobiles to make calls, but Truphone is my service of choice. I save a lot of money when compared to what calls cost on the AT&T network.

No wonder phone companies don’t have much use for Wi-Fi unless they can use it off-load calls from the precious wireless spectrum to the Wi-Fi network. Others, like T-Mobile USA, have come up with a way to measure calls made via Wi-Fi hotspots and count them against wireless subscriber minutes, unless you sign up for an additional $10-a-month plan, Business Week notes.

So obviously they’ve gone out of their way to neuter VoIP services like Truphone. More recently, Nokia decided to take out VoIP functionality from some of its N-Series devices, like the N78 and the forthcoming N96, in what could very well be called carrier arm-twisting.

I think that if carriers want to compete with mobile VoIP they need to lower their long-distance prices to that of VoIP services. By using their network backbones they can offer convenience and quality to trounce the upstarts. The problem is that wireless companies will not make this logical move — until it’s too late.

Apple iPhone / iPod touch Multiple Vulnerabilities Says Secunia

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Two vulnerabilities and a security issue have been reported in Apple iPhone and iPod touch, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting attacks, bypass certain security restrictions, or to compromise a vulnerable device.

1) An unspecified error in the handling of URLs exists in Safari. This can be exploited to cause a memory corruption when a user is enticed to access a specially crafted URL.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code.

2) An error in the handling of emergency calls can be exploited to bypass the Passcode Lock feature and allows users with physical access to an iPhone to launch applications without the passcode.

This security issue is reported in iPhone v1.0 through v1.1.2 only.

3) An error in Safari can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

For more information see vulnerability #21 in:
