India Blocking Some VoIP Services

Source: www.voip-news.com

VoIP in India could get a little more challenging to access. Thirty-nine off-shore providers are getting the cold shoulder from India’s Department of Telecom (DoT), which has ordered them blocked.

The country prohibits unlicensed providers from providing internet telephony services.

According to Business Line:

There are three types of calls which can be made using Internet telephony services. Subscribers will be allowed to make calls between one computer and another computer; between a computer and a mobile or a fixed line phone, and between mobile or fixed line phones. These calls can be made to any part of the world. The advantage for customers is that they can make long distance calls at local call charges.

However, in India, only unified access licence holders are permitted to offer all three types of Net telephony services. ISPs are allowed to offer only PC-to-PC calls and PC- to-mobile/fixed line that too on international calls.

China to beat US and hold number one position in broadband world, India far behind

Source: voipcentral.org

China will very soon surpass US and hold the number one position in the broadband world, the analyst and consulting company Ovum claimed. While, India is far behind in the broadband race in comparison other emerging powers.

The research company says the number of broadband customers in China is increasing steadily recording 79 percent yearly. By the end of 2007, China will have more than 79 million broadband connections. It would touch nearly 130 million by 2010.

As of now, America is leading the broadband world with around 51 million broadband connections. However, China will topple the USA within a year.

Kevin Lee, a senior analyst at Ovum comments on the Chinas progress,

We believe that China’s broadband development will continue to benefit from a booming economy, growing incomes, expanding PC penetration and new applications such as VoIP and IPTV. The Olympics will provide another boost.

The report says IPTV and online gaming are the major factor for the steady growth in Chinas broadband market.

For India, there is nothing to feel good in the report. India is far behind in the broadband race. The countrys new broadband policy targets 20 million broadband subscribers and 40 million internet subscribers by 2010. A recent data shows India had a subscriber base of only 13.1 lakh as of March 2006. It is increasing by one lakh every month.

VOIP set free in India!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Indian Telephony providers get go ahead to use VOIP.
In a significant policy change announced by Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Thursday, telephone service companies (access-providers like Airtel, MTNL, BSNL, Reliance and others) can now use IP technology on their backbone networks to transact calls over the internet.
Currently, internet-based telephony is not legal within India. Users can only dial overseas phones from their PCs using internet service providers (ISPs). They cannot call normal telecom networks within the country from their PCs (this restriction will continue).
These access providers will continue to offer internet connectivity and broadband services combining voice, data and video.

The government has also done away with two separate types of data-communication licences: IP-II and IP-VPN. Existing holders of these licences — like Powergrid, Gail, RailTel — can now become full-fledged domestic and international long-distance service providers and will be able to directly connect with clients.

Stand-alone ISPs, like Satyam and SpectraNet, can provide only internet access and internet content services. As a consolation, their annual licence fee has been cut to 6 per cent.
