Friday Links: Skype, VoIP, Inc., and Conference Calls

Source: www.voip-news.com

For several months, while working on various projects for a large technology company and working full time on top of that, I would take conference calls while driving, eating lunch, having breakfast . . . whenever I could fit them in. Apparently LucaFiligheddu has been there too, because there are some good suggestions up about how to survive (such as using Skype). One suggestion, besides remembering the water, is to use Iotum to record the call and share or other VoIP services out there. Good thinking! Check it out here.

The VoIP Weblog declares that Skype to Skype calling is “righteous.” Now there’s a word you don’t hear everyday . . . or at all, since the 80s ended, oh, 18 years ago. Still, read the post here.

And New Telephony wants to know what VoIP, Inc. is thinking these days. Or at least what the powers that be are thinking …

Wednesday Round-Up: Cisco Updates, Trouble at VoIP Inc., Manifone

Source: www.voip-news.com

Internet Storm Center warns that it’s time to update IP phones. Cisco Unified Communications has released a number of critical security updates to close-up vulnerabilities. Find out more here.

What message exactly is VoIP, Inc. trying to send to shareholders these days? LucaFiligheddu has an idea. Read about it here.

The VoIP Weblog looks at Manifone, which has a similar model to Jajah (which inevitably makes me picture Jar-Jar Binks. That’s what it sounds like in my head. Jajah, not Binks.). Click here to read it.

8×8, Inc. Chairman Speaks on Schwarzenegger’s Broadband Task Force Report

Source: www.voip-news.com

The Terminator, otherwise known as the Governor of California, has been a little busy lately, as has his California Broadband Task Force.  The Task Force recently issued a report detailing broadband deployment recommendations for increased adoption in California, entitled “The State of Connectivity: Building Innovation Through Broadband.”  The report is the result of over a year’s worth of work by the Task Force to not only study California’s current broadband positioning, but what they can do to gear up in the future to become more technologically equal with the rest of the country.  Their research indicated that nearly 2,000 communities in California still don’t have access to high-speed Internet.

8×8, Inc.’s Chairman and CEO, Bryan Martin, was appointed to the Task Force by Governor Schwarzenegger in November 2006 and had this to say in a recent press release, “The benefits awaiting Californians when complete statewide deployment of broadband is achieved should not be underestimated.  Broadband access affects everything from economic and community development to education, health care and public safety to adoption of emerging technologies such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The increased application of broadband in these areas will have a positive impact on the lives of every California resident.”

The Task Force recommendations include:

  — Build out high-speed broadband infrastructure to all Californians
  — Develop model permitting standards and encourage collaboration among providers
  — Increase the use and adoption of broadband and computer technology
  — Engage and reward broadband innovation and research
  — Create a statewide e-health network
  — Leverage educational opportunities to increase broadband use
  — Continue state-level and statewide leadership
