3CX’s Free Softphone

Source: www.voip-news.com

3CX has unveiled a free VoIP softphone for businesses.

Yes, free.

“3CX VoIP Phone is great for businesses that wish to have an easy to deploy, business-level VoIP soft phone. Because it is free, the usual hassle of administration of client licenses is avoided. The free editions of other VoIP phones do not have key features such as call transfer or the ability to put a call on hold,” said Nick Galea, CEO at 3CX.

The user-friendly phone allows users to review their call history, put calls on hold and accept, reject or ignore calls./

“VoIP Phones are an interesting option for businesses – they are easy to administer and environmentally friendly. Hardware phones require additional electricity, administration and desk space,” Galea said.

Junction Network is offering a free SIP trial to Response Point users. The trial, which is geared toward SMB owners, will give users a chance to experience the service before committing to it.

Nearly Free Overseas Skype Calls?

Source: www.voip-news.com

Overseas Skype calls for nearly free? Yep, it’s possible with a service called Talkster. VoIP News has the details.

In VoIP as elsewhere, small changes can have surprising consequences. Take Skype Ltd.’s recently released feature that lets users attach certain caller-ID numbers to SkypeOut calls. One consequence of this new feature will be that Skype users can avoid paying Skype’s international calling rates. All they’ll need to do is make SkypeOut calls that start out local but travel overseas through Talkster’s ad-supported Free World Dialing service, which could save them as much as 25 cents per minute.

Truphone Offers Free/Cheap Calls Away From Wi-Fi

Source: www.voip-news.com

Truphone subscribers are now being offered free or cheap VoIP calls over the cellular network when they are away from Wi-Fi hot spots. The mobile VoIP solution uses a unique set-up to save customers money.

According to ComputerWorld:

“We’ve put together our mobile numbers and interconnect, with SIM4travel’s home location register,” said James Tagg, CEO of Truphone. The company has its own number range, which has enabled it to act as a mobile operator, and win against operators, including T-Mobile, which challenged this. In April, it raised another $33.6 million in venture funding to add to about $25 million, which it raised in 2007.

The idea of mobile VoIP is gaining ground in the U.K., with Australian operator Freshtel Pty. Ltd. launching a trial backed by a Tesco, and with a “buy one get one free” offer. Freshtel uses a VoIP client similar to the one that Truphone is installing on Nokia E and N series phones, and operates on any Wi-Fi.

AT&T Launches Free Wi-Fi for LaptopConnect Customers

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

AT&T has announced that qualifying LaptopConnect customers can now access more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hot spots free of charge. Users can access Wi-Fi at nearly 7,000 participating Starbucks locations plus thousands more AT&T Wi-FiSM locations, including restaurants, airports, hotels and other convenient locations across the United States.

AT&T LaptopConnect uses AT&T’s wireless network to keep customers connected to e-mail, the Internet and business applications almost anywhere they can make a phone call. Qualifying LaptopConnect customers will now automatically receive a pop-up message alerting them to Wi-Fi availability when in range of an AT&T hot spot. At that point, customers who have downloaded the latest AT&T Communication Manager software to their laptop PC just need to click Connect to access the Wi-Fi connectivity. The offer is available to customers who subscribe to a DataConnect plan of $59.99 or more.¹ AT&T Communication Manager comes with new LaptopConnect cards and is available for free at www.att.com/laptopconnect.

How It Works….
AT&T also offers free Wi-Fi access to qualifying broadband subscribers. The company plans to expand free Wi-Fi access to additional wireless customers in the future.

When not in a hot spot, AT&T LaptopConnect cards operate on AT&T’s wireless network, which provides DSL-like speeds on the company’s 3G network in more than 275 markets in the U.S., reaching nearly 350 markets by year end. AT&T’s wireless network also offers data connectivity across AT&T’s EDGE network which covers more than 13,000 cities and towns and some 40,000 miles of major highways. Internationally, AT&T can offer customers data access in more than 145 countries and 3G roaming in 60 countries.

AT&T 3G Media Net PrePaid + Truphone = Free Calls

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

As many of you know, I’ve become enamored with using my Skypephone over Hutchison3G in the UK via a pre-paid SIM and ultra cheap (5 pounds a month) data plans. I also use prepaid 3G from 3 or T-Mobile as well on various devices and data cards when in the UK or from Yoigo when I’m in Spain.

Well now here in the USA the idea of cheap mobile data has come to be on some mobile phones from AT&T.

Here are some links that make this a very interesting option:

International Long Distance–these pries look as low as Skype.

Here’s the Unlimited Media Net Link. Services like those that offer VoIP (i.e Truphone) work very well over 3G, if you’re standing still, but for some reason Voice over Mobile Data really wavers in and out as you move from cell site to cell site.

Bottom line, if you need a second mobile, this could be your best deal.

Free Calls Out, But (Sometimes) The Receiving Party Pays

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

We’ve all heard the model of calls where in Europe and the UK the Calling Party Pays. Here in the USA when it comes to a cell phone to cell phone call, both parties pay per se, even in an unlimited plan model. Now out of Israel comes a Spikko, which envisions a world of receiving party pays if you’re not a Spikko member.

Novel.

Interesting.

Different

all comes to mind.

First off, Spikko bills themselves as a calling "club" and like PhoneGnome and Gizmo5, provides totally free calling between members. What more they also claim to provide:

* A permanent local Israeli number

* "Spikkophone" – software for managing your telephone calls, which can be easily installed on any PC.

* Voice mail messages sent to your email when calls are missed.

* Incoming calls: those who call your Spikko number reach the Spikkiphone on your PC.

* Outgoing calls: As a Spikko club member you will be able to perform outgoing calls to any international number, free of charge, based on minutes gained from incoming calls.

* Your personal portal: The Spikko website provides you with advanced tools to manage your personal communication needs.

* Various additional services (chats, interactive phonebook, etc.)

AT&T Helps Connect Military Families for Mother’s Day, Supports the USO and Military Moms with Free Phone Calls

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

AT&T will donate more than 30,000 prepaid phone cards in 2008, with a retail value of more than $200,000, to be distributed to military personnel stationed overseas with the help of the USO. This donation builds on more than 85 years of AT&T support for U.S. military families and a 20-year partnership with the USO. The company also recently provided a $315,000 sponsorship to support USO events and entertainment tours in 2008.

The donation program will begin with the first 10,000 prepaid cards distributed on overseas military bases and during USO entertainment tours slated for the weeks surrounding Mother’s Day. According to AT&T, this donation is in honor of U.S. military moms, whether they are on active duty or whether they have a son, daughter, husband or loved one who is actively serving.

In the coming weeks, the USO will help AT&T distribute the first 10,000 phone cards to troops throughout Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy and Germany, including personally handing cards to wounded military members at Landsthul Regional Medical Center. Each donated phone card will provide military members with 20 minutes of free talk time from Iraq to the U.S.

The donation builds on AT&T’s commitment to help keep military families connected: In the past two years, AT&T has donated prepaid phone cards with a retail value of over $4 million to help support U.S. military members and their families. In the past 20 years, AT&T has contributed tens of millions of dollars to the USO in support of the Operation USO Care Package and USO Operation Phone Home® programs as well as USO entertainment tours; and has helped the USO boost troop morale through funding regional operations in Europe, Southwest Asia and the Pacific.

Since 1941, the USO has provided morale, welfare and recreation-type programs and services to enhance the quality of life for military personnel and their families around the world. The USO currently operates more than 130 centers, including 10 mobile canteens, offering free Internet and e-mail access, prepaid international phone cards, entertainment and lounge areas, libraries, travel assistance and refreshments. USO entertainment tours bring celebrity volunteers to entertain and lift the morale of troops and to express the gratitude and support of the American people.

For more than 85 years, AT&T has remained dedicated to supporting active military personnel, their families and veterans through charitable contributions, sponsorships, the hiring of military veterans and maintaining policies that support reservists who are called to duty. Since 2000, AT&T has donated free prepaid phone cards with a retail value of nearly $8 million to military members and has provided nearly $6 million in grants that support military members and related nonprofit organizations. The company has also built 70 calling centers for military members stationed in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan, so that they may stay in touch with their families.

Read An Ad, Get Free WiFi on Your iPhone

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

If you own and use an Apple iPhone there’s isn’t a Boingo Mobile client for it, but now can have free WiFi access on your iPhone in 28 airports which Boingo operates in, and get it for free.

The catch? You have to watch a 15 second ad.

As someone who uses Boingo just about everywhere, and is a true fan, it seems worth it. The ads are powered by JiWire, which wants to be the Google of mobile ad serving.

AT&T is Providing Free WiFi Access to iPhone Users (Says MacRumors.com)

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

According to news site, MacRumors.com, AT&T is giving free WiFi access to iPhone users just by entering in your cell phone number.

I can’t substantiate this because I am already an AT&T customer on the U-verse side, so I get free WiFi by default.

AT&T Annual Stockholder Meeting Adjounred; Randall Gives Us a Free $5.00 Gift Card to Starbucks

Source: alanweinkrantz.typepad.com

I’ve just returned from AT&T’s annual stockholder meeting in San Antonio.  Stock Symbol: T
P1000602

I will have another post up soon about my views on the meeting, which was really more like a town hall meeting.

AT&T Chairman & CEO, Randall Stephenson officially announced the AT&T / Starbucks rollout, and we each got a free $5.00 gift card to Starbucks.

After the meeting, I headed over to the Starbucks in The Quarry, where the iTunes store is up and going.

Reporters on deadline can call my cell at 210.410.3075 for consumer insight on the AT&T/Starbucks/Apple iTunes deal.
