Hughes Rolls Out Satellite Based VoIP for Telefonica Espana

Source: www.voip-news.com

Hughes Europe has rolled out a HN System solution for Telefonica Espana that offers satellite-based VoIP rural telecommunications services.

“The rapid implementation of our Hughes satellite-based system network enables Telefonica to provide a high-quality and cost-effective communications service to meet its Universal Service Obligation under Spanish law,” said Christopher Britton, managing director of Hughes Europe. “Customers living in rural and remote areas can, for the first time, have access to all the benefits of broadband communications, such as Internet access, data transmission, Fax Group III and access to emergency services,” said Britton.

According to Hughes:

The rural network installation by Hughes is the latest project in a highly successful 15-year relationship working with the Spanish telecoms giant. For Telefonica Espana, the Hughes solution offered the ideal combination of cost-effective equipment performance, lower operational cost, and minimal implementation risk. And, because of the companies’ long-standing relationship, Telefonica had complete confidence in Hughes’ ability to deliver.

The new communications services are made possible through the installation of a second switching centre interconnecting the rural satellite VoIP network to the national telephony network. These services are available to new customers based in remote/rural areas and to existing customers migrating from the existing TRAC network (Telefonia Rural de Acceso Celular — Rural Telephony with Cellular Access) to the satellite-based VoIP network. The network comprises approximately 8,000 terminals, of which 80 percent are residential, 15 percent public telephony for city councils, and 5 percent for small/medium enterprises.

Explaining VoIP as the prospect of business communications in the Arab world, Efonica asserted that the countries of Middle East are still lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to implementation of VoIP. The main reason is lack of awareness among the people and business enterprises of these countries. This in turn, slows down the growth VoIP market.

Fusion Telecommunications-owned Dubai-based firm Efonica that has more than one million VoIP subscribers elaborated small and medium business will benefit the most if VoIP-based communications take off in the Middle East. Consumers will also gain a lot with free and economical calling worldwide.

Roger Karam, CEO of Efonica described,

Once companies understand how this channel can be an important communications tool, they can boost their operational performance significantly.

Efonica gets 100,000 subscribers in one month

Source: voipcentral.org

Will Efonica beat Skype? The question may sound extremely strange, since Skype has a strong base in the major IP hubs of the world. However, the way Fusion is gaining momentum in the present VoIP market, it would not be surprising to put the above question.

The 100 per cent Fusion Telecommunications-owned Dubai-based firm Efonica has now more than 100,000 registered subscribers in less than a month. Fusion started its new Efonica service on June 19 and has already attained registrations from over 50 countries around the world. This is an indication of Fusions growing popularity.

Matthew Rosen, President and CEO of Fusion commented,

This is a historic day for Fusion. We have had a strong consumer response to our innovative VoIP offering, and are delighted that our vision of creating a worldwide Efonica calling community is becoming a reality so quickly.

The company is excepting more subscribers in the coming days.

Efonica facilitates its customers to dial any landline or mobile phone around the globe with its efoOut service, and to schedule a call between two phone numbers when they are away from their softphone or SIP enabled device with its efoLink service.

Efonica dreams to beat Skype by 2007 riding on UAE regulatory body ruling on VoIP

Source: voipcentral.org

The 100 per cent Fusion Telecommunications-owned Dubai-based firm Efonica, is warming itself to become the global leader VoIP services beating Skype that has over 100 million subscribers. But how? Well, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of United Arab Emirates ruling VoIP legal is imminent. The ruling is expected to come within Q1 of 2007. As the soundbytes emerging now, the suggestion is that Efonica will be fully prepared by then.

Upbeat with the prospect, Ibrahim Choueiry, Regional Director Asia and Africa, Efonica says;

We aim to be ready as soon as the TRA makes an announcement.

There may be a probable glitch though in Efonicas ambitions. It is that the key to be a world leader is to provide not only quality service, but also it should be free. Also, one more thing that might bother subscribers is that how many service providers would be into play though which the Efonica service would be provided.

So whether the service would be free or the service would be provided through other players that the only two current service providers Etisalat and Du is crucial to Efonicas grand plans.

An optimistic Choueiry believes that TRA ruling will probably let IP to IP calls be a free service in much the same way as communicating via MSN Messenger is free. However, if the service is provided through a third party, then obviously there would be some kind of a charge to the customer.

Anyway, only time will tell how this thing shapes up for Efonica. For that, one will have to wait till the first quarter of 2007. In any case, with a large migrant population in the UAE especially from South Asia, if this clicks, Skype might well have a competitor in its hands. Efonica can well spread like a viral not only in the Gulf, but to South Asia as well, and that’s where the numbers are.

Lets keep our fingers crossed.
