DirecTV goes VoIP

DirecTV has will provide its customers VoIP and high speed broadband services in the coming days, most probably next year. For which, the California-based satellite TV broadcaster has reached out an agreement with Current Group, the provider of Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) internet services. However, the financial details of the deal are not disclosed by both the companies.

As known better, the bundled services are in growing demand in the current VoIP market all over the world, especially in America.

The leading cable players such as Comcast and Time Warner share a major portion of VoIP revenue because of bundled services. They have now edge over traditional VoIP players.

The recent deal with Current Group would enable DirecTV to extend bundled services to the customers.

The TV broadcaster will now offer bundled package to nearly 1.3 million residential customers. The bundled pack includes TV service, high speed Internet access (256Kbps to 3Mbps0 and VoIP service.

DirecTV to provide satellite VoIP service

DirecTV, a cent percent subsidiary of DirecTV Group will very soon provide Satellite VoIP service to its customers in USA. For which, it has joined its resources with Hicks Holding and Vistula Communication, a New York based provider of hosted VoIP.

With this announcement, DirecTV has emerged as the first satellite player to provide triple play of Voice, Internet access and pay TV services.

DirecPath, a joint venture of Hicks and DirecTV Group, would offer the triple play service. It is now testing the waters with a bundled offering of television programming, broadband voice, data and security offerings.

Vistula Communications, a New York-based supplier of hosted VoIP would provide Voice services on behalf of DirecTV.

With the competition from Phone and Cable companies offering bundles that consists of TV, PHONE and Broadband, DirecTV needs to find new avenues to retain it’s customers.
The joint venture, called DirecPath, will use voice over Internet Protocol equipment from Vistula Communications Services to run a six-month pilot program of the technology. If the trial goes well, voice services could be expanded to a larger portion of DirecPath’s customers, Vistula said in a statement.

DirecPath was formed by DirecTV and Hicks in May to provide bundled services such as broadband Internet access, phone service and video to multiple dwelling units (MDUs) and gated-community residents across the United States. DirecTV has formed partnerships with phone companies Verizon Communications, Qwest Communications International and BellSouth to sell a bundle of broadband, telephony and TV services to single-family homes.

Rupert MurdochMedia Mogul Rupert Murdoch said that his News Corps DirecTV satellite TV division was about to decide a strategy on how to venture into the wireless hi-speed internet bazaar. He said that it will be ready with a plan in 2 months.

Murdoch, whose News Corp owns the controlling shares of DirecTV said that the satalite group could invest about USD 1 billion in a deal to provide internet access enabling 2-way service that cant otherwise be offered through satellite links.

At a conference on Monday, he said that the media groups recently expanded internet businesses were likely to generate revenues around $350 400 million dollars in 2007.

He also said that he expected revenues to what he termed as take off after that. He was especially extremely optimistic about the prospects for MySpace.com that continues to attract whopping one million new users a week. There will be some new features that will be introduced this week such as free downloads of video. Not only that, he also added that IM and voice services would be introduced soon too.
