Hard Times at CounterPath

Source: www.voip-news.com

CounterPath Corporation is reducing costs by restructuring their business. The company hopes to cut costs by $4 million each year. It is however hoping to involve audience interaction too.

“This restructuring, while difficult, is primarily the result of integrating our acquisitions. We are also being prudent and managing our cash resources in light of the current business climate. We made three acquisitions over the past year to expand our solution portfolio beyond our award winning desktop softphone. We added enterprise capabilities in both fixed and mobile communications, as well as adding a mobile operator’s solution to turn the Internet into a global open roaming network. Our business prospects are solid and our premise of unifying desktop and mobile communications is beginning to take hold with customers as our software decreases costs and increases productivity for users.”

Buzzwords like productivity were toss about/

“The changes we are announcing today will ensure that CounterPath will streamline operating activities in line with profitability expectations and continue delivering on our strategy,” said Jones.

CounterPath’s FMC Play

Source: andyabramson.blogs.com

I got to see the CounterPath (i.e. BridgePort Networks) Fixed Mobile solution in action.

It worked. Calls went seamlessly between desktop computers, mobile phones, with a one number solution, installed at the carriers network operation center. Unlike prior demos when BridgePort Networks was an agency client pre-acquisition, this was a real live deployment that is being sold by a carrier in Eastern Europe.

Now only if more carriers would realize the value proposition this has to offer:

1) The Internet becomes a giant roaming cloud.

2) Customers, especially enterprise customers, get a single solution for laptop and mobile calling.

3) The idea of Presence really gets delivered.

There’s a lot more to this, but it’s one of my favorite "new" technologies at the show…

Mobile VoIP clients are becoming the order of the day. In order to cash on the frenzy associated with mobile VoIP, CounterPath is offering Mobile VoIP client in Europe which will be running on WinMobile devices. The company already develops soft phone client for Mac and Windows computers.

This new client is called X-PDA and is available in two variants as per the size of the mobile screen. The benefit of this client is that it is compatible with other VoIP services such as Vonage and Broadvoice. It has been optimized for HP iPAQ rx1950 and HP iPAQ hx2004. It will be priced between 25 to 30 Euros.

Mobile VoIP is trying to make inroads but a number of carriers are not happy with it since it eats into their revenues and as a result many of them have barred VoIP in their service pack. Click here to get the client.
