VoIP Manufacturers in China to Raise Prises, Production

Source: www.voip-news.com

China VoIP phone manufacturers are planning to raise prices. Fifty-nine percent of manufacturers there said that export prices will increase and they expect sales to continue to grow too, according to Global Sources’  China Sourcing Report: VoIP Phones.

“Fierce competition has driven half of Greater China’s VoIP phone manufacturers out of business over the past two years, especially those who relied mainly on competitive pricing to gain orders,” said  report publisher Mark A. Saunderson. “Higher production costs, the appreciation of the Yuan, mainland China’s domestic inflation and intellectual property rights fees are among the factors that have led many manufacturers to focus on value-added models, which bring better margins.”

Meanwhile, seventy-four percent  plan to produce more phones.

“Survivors in the industry have learned that they need to move upmarket to maintain profit margins,” Saunderson said. “This is good news for buyers who can expect to find higher end models with more value-added features coming out of Greater China.”

Rebtel Service Enters China

Source: www.voip-news.com

Rebtel recently announced that their low-cost calling service is now available in Shanghai, China.  With this new addition and Rebtel’s local number service, users will be able to enjoy inexpensive calling worldwide, and free international calls to any of the other 39 countries that Rebtel currently services.

From their recent blog entry:

Rebtel calls from Shanghai to the U.S. cost just $0.018 per minute; $0.019 per minute from the U.S. to Shanghai.  None of the VoIP services beat that, but even their prices are better than AT&T, which charges $3.50 per minute to call a mobile phone in the China from a mobile phone in the U.S.

Rebtel calls from Shanghai to U.K. landlines cost $0.019 per minute, and $0.018 per minute to U.K. mobile phones.  Using Rebtel to call Shanghai from London is the same as from the U.S.: $0.019 per minute.  Again — Rebtel is the low-price leader among internet calling services.  And Vodafone doesn’t come close, with $3.33 per minute to call Shanghai from the U.K.

Shanghai is just the start.  We plan to expand Rebtel service to the rest of China in the New Year.  So, stand by.

China, The New BroadBand Nation with 122 Million Nodes

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

The number of Chinese broadband users has hit 122 million, becoming the number one position in the world, According to an news article on Shanghai News report.
Sixty percent of the netizens surfed on the Internet via broadband, said Jiang Yaoping, Deputy Minister of the Information Industry, at a work conference of China Telecommunications Corporation on Saturday. Last year, more than 30 percent of China Telecom’s income came from non-phone services, which translate to Internet Services, broadband services and rose from 5.5 percent in 2002, the report said. So VoIP services like Skype will get much attention as well.
One-third of the new broadband users are farmers, where the demand for the service is high, China Telecom officials said.
One way the or the other, once the other 30% decides to convert to broadband, it will be a hard target to hit, unless India also become a developing Country and it’s farmers also decides to get broadband for themselves.

Cisco significantly increases investments across a broad range of business activities in China

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

BEIJING, China - Nov. 1, 2007 - Cisco® today announced a multi-year investment initiative aimed at strengthening its business commitments and long-term corporate strategy in China. The program, announced today by Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers at a press conference in Beijing, defines a three- to five-year plan of increased investment in China in alignment with the country’s long term economic, societal and environmental goals.

"Today’s announcements underscore both China’s strategic importance to Cisco’s global operations and the broad range of growth opportunities presented by the China market, particularly as an innovator in the next wave of the Internet’s development in collaboration and Web 2.0 technologies. Cisco has made significant investments in our China business since we established operations in the country in 1994 and this program will lay the foundation for the next chapter in Cisco’s development in China," said John Chambers, chairman and CEO of Cisco.

Cisco’s multi-year investment program will include:

* A significant increase in local procurement. In the past five years, Cisco has purchased more than USD $7 billion worth of China-sourced components and services, a critical part of the company’s virtual manufacturing supply chain. According to Cisco estimates, these procurement commitments provide employment to 50,000 people in manufacturing management roles and through contract manufacturing and supplier partners.
* The total value of Cisco’s commitments in China since 2002 are estimated at more than USD $8.5 billion, and under the initiative announced today, could expand to approximately USD $16 billion during the next five years, including significant increases in materials procurement, and increases in education, Cisco Capital, research and development, direct and indirect investments and sales and service operations.
* A Memorandum of Understanding with China Development Bank to explore a joint investment program that would provide capital and expertise for innovative Chinese businesses. The initiative is intended to support high-growth Chinese companies over multiple sectors, with a focus on information technology, "green" innovators, and other key segments (see separate announcement).
* A commitment to expansion of the Cisco Networking Academies program in cooperation with China’s Ministry of Education to add 300 additional academies in vocational colleges during the next three years, with a specific focus on China’s central and western provinces. Currently, there are more than 200 Networking Academies in 70 cities throughout China, which have trained more than 90,000 students since inception. The new initiatives will add the capacity to train an additional 100,000 students by 2010. Cisco will also donate more than USD $6 million worth of networking equipment to assist in establishing labs in the new academies.
* A memorandum of understanding with Alibaba Group, China’s largest business-to-business (B2B) on-line portal. Under the MOU, Cisco and Alibaba will explore ways to jointly offer collaboration and business management solutions to small and medium businesses (SMBs) in China. Under a previous agreement, Cisco will also invest USD $17.5 million in Alibaba.com Limited, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, as part of its planned initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, becoming one of only eight cornerstone investors in the listing (see separate announcement).
* Establishment of incremental funding up to USD $400 million for Cisco Systems Capital China for providing financing facilities to Cisco customers in China during the next three to five years. Cisco Systems Capital China commenced captive financing operations in June 2006 and has funded USD $60 million in customer assets to date.
* The establishment of Cisco’s first global "green" technology center to address the increasing need for sustainable development, energy efficiency, reduction of electronic waste, and emission reductions inside and outside of China. The center will also augment existing programs underway by Cisco China’s R&D teams in the area of application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) power efficiency design and expand this into other product areas.
* Establishment of product and research teams to develop innovative networking equipment to address the SMB (small and medium business) market and emerging countries markets, leveraging local design and manufacturing resources.

Cisco first established operations in China in 1994 and now employs more than 2,300 staff in sales, customer support and service, research and development, BPO/IT outsourcing, Cisco Capital and manufacturing. The company has 12 offices in China, a major R&D facility in Shanghai, Scientific Atlanta R&D/manufacturing facilities, as well as several development centers supporting WebEx, which Cisco acquired in March 2007.

Virtual VoIP Carriers (VVCs) Will Grow to 12.96 Million by 2011, Just for Chinese VoIP consumers

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com

DUBLIN, Ireland–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c51702) has announced the addition of The Consumer VoIP Market in China: Virtual Carriers Still Have Legal Market Space to their offering.

With China’s telecom market having relatively high long-distance calling rates, VoIP has gained fast market recognition. Besides the big success of IP card services, telecom carriers are continuously pushing broadband IP telephony service forward in China, the high-tech market research firm says. The number of broadband VoIP subscribers served by telecom carriers is expected to rapidly expand to 9.53 million by the end of 2011, up from 720,000 in 2006.

Another class of providers, virtual VoIP carriers (VVCs), provides PC to phone services by deploying soft-switching systems on Internet and media gateways between the Internet and public switched telephone networks. The Ministry of Information Industry has declared that broadband IP telephony service can be legally provided only by traditional service providers, thus VVCs are operating illegally and have little phone-number resources (most subscribers can only make outgoing calls). However, due to intense competition among voice service providers, and VVCs’ lower price compared with traditional long-distance calling or IP card services, VVCs are having success.

Recent research found the following:

* VVCs had 1.1 million consumer subscribers by the end of 2005, and we estimate that the number was around 1.23 million at the end of 2006.
* Consumer broadband IP telephony subscribers served by VVCs will grow to 12.96 million by 2011.

The research, "The Consumer VoIP Market in China: Virtual Carriers Still Have Legal Market Space" covers the market for Voice over Internet Protocol in China. It includes subscriber forecasts for telecom providers and VVCs through 2011. It also contains extensive analysis of the market drivers and barriers, and profiles of selected providers.

China to beat US and hold number one position in broadband world, India far behind

Source: voipcentral.org

China will very soon surpass US and hold the number one position in the broadband world, the analyst and consulting company Ovum claimed. While, India is far behind in the broadband race in comparison other emerging powers.

The research company says the number of broadband customers in China is increasing steadily recording 79 percent yearly. By the end of 2007, China will have more than 79 million broadband connections. It would touch nearly 130 million by 2010.

As of now, America is leading the broadband world with around 51 million broadband connections. However, China will topple the USA within a year.

Kevin Lee, a senior analyst at Ovum comments on the Chinas progress,

We believe that China’s broadband development will continue to benefit from a booming economy, growing incomes, expanding PC penetration and new applications such as VoIP and IPTV. The Olympics will provide another boost.

The report says IPTV and online gaming are the major factor for the steady growth in Chinas broadband market.

For India, there is nothing to feel good in the report. India is far behind in the broadband race. The countrys new broadband policy targets 20 million broadband subscribers and 40 million internet subscribers by 2010. A recent data shows India had a subscriber base of only 13.1 lakh as of March 2006. It is increasing by one lakh every month.

China banks on VOIP, The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) that is…

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), China’s largest commercial bank, with revenues exceeding $250 billion, was looking to decrease its long-distance phone expenses between its more than 50,000 domestic and international branches and affiliate offices.
FanFan Zheng, division manager of information technology of ABC, says, "We evaluated a lot of VoIP products. We like Tenor because of its ease of installation and because it doesn’t require any changes to the existing voice or data networks.

These locations were in all of China’s major provinces, cities and counties. ABC’s goal was to consolidate multiple regional call centers to one centralized call center through a Voice over IP (VoIP) network.

Of foremost concern to ABC among its many requirements to implementing VoIP was that it had to have minimum impact on the existing IP network and voice system performance. The bank did not want to have to upgrade the existing IP network, reprogram its PBX or purchase any PBX upgrades or interface cards.

Most importantly, it wanted assurances that there would be no degradation to voice quality compared to wire line calls.

The bank required that its voice network be compatible with international standards (i.e., H.323), and also needed to be scalable for nationwide deployment and growth, and interpretable with other vendors. ABC wanted to minimize the impact on its end-users so they did not have to change their dial plans or habits. Overall, ABC required high reliability, even under extreme and unusual circumstances.

Public Information Technology Co. (PiTech), a large Chinese distributor, recommended Quintum’s Tenor VoIP multiPath switches. The switches had the technologies that ABC required, the diverse applications that ABC’s environment necessitated and the customer support that put ABC at ease. Read more here..
