voip overtakes pstn in china

In a country where 100,000 new users sign for a particular VoIP service (Read Skype) everyday, it is not surprising to announce sidelining of traditional phone services from mainstream. Yes, I am talking about China, which according to ReportLinker report, has enjoyed tremendous VoIP growth recording 109.931 billion minutes upto September 2006. It is 11.8 percent growth year over year.

Although, the call duration of VoIP in China is equal in number to that of PSTN, however the growth VoIP call duration is higher than PSTN. VoIP today accounts 43.16 percent in the long-distance call duration.

The research firm has claimed that the share of VoIP in the long-distance call market will be equal to or even exceed the total long-distance call of PSTN and mobile (GSM and CDMA) in the following two or three years gradually.

The compound annual growth rate of VoIP equipment spending by Chinese businesses will amount to 48% in the next five years. They will spend nearly 4.2 billion Chinese yuan renminbi in 2009.

Meanwhile, China also is suffering from illegal VoIP calls, which have been growing 30% every year from 2003 to 2006. Last year, illegal international call volume was about 500 million minutes. Therefore, the China government needs to take a cautious approach towards VoIP.

Illegal VoIP mushrooming in China

Source: voipcentral.org

With In-Stat report candidly figures out nearly 12.96 million unlicensed virtual VoIP carries (VVCs) by 2011 in China, it is easily foreseeable how illegal VoIP mushrooming in the country.

The report further says nearly 13 million Chinese customers will be accessing illegal VoIP services in the next four years. The number of unlicensed VVCs was 1.23 million at the end of 2006. It would touch 12.96 by the end of 2011. Interestingly, the legal service provider will increase from 720,000 now to touch 9.53 million by 2011, the report says.

Recently, the Ministry of Information Industry has ruled that traditional service providers have the right to provide legal VoIP services. Hence, the VVCs are running their network illegally with modest phone number resources. They offer only outgoing calling service to the customers.

Speaking about the report, In-Stat analyst Kevin Li says,

However, due to intense competition among voice service providers, and VVCs’ lower price compared with traditional long-distance calling or prepaid [internet phone card] services, VVCs are having success.

Pingo makes VoIP calls free to China too

Source: voipcentral.org

Shall I wrong to say, there is also a strong competition for free services? If it was not so, then Pingo would not have suddenly launched their free VoIP offer for the customers.

Pingo made an announced that they are offering free VoIP calls to China and Vietnam during the lunar New Year Festival season, which starts from February 18 and ends on March 4.

The free offer came barely a few days after Skypes announcement to provide a similar type of service for the Chinese speaking customers.

The 15-day free service is an effort to hit the Chinese market, which is one of the potential VoIP markets in the world.

ebay-skype-in-china_28

When eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion last year, the market experts started saying that the auctioneer had overpaid for the acquisition. However, others maintained the auctioneer is sensible on its part. They predicted that Skype would be the best platform to hit Chinese market, which has supposedly billions of potential customers for eBay.

EBay did not gain anything in China through Skype. Incidentally, China is now blocking Skype. The government thinks that existence of Skype is a threat to the Chinese companies.

According to this source, eBay has decided to axe its website in China and replace it with a new site in collaboration with Tom Online. It is expected that any of the Chinese Internet Company would operate the new site. California-based eBay would hold 49 percent stake of the new site.

After USA, China is the second major online market in the world. However, eBay could not strength its position in China.
