Could you imagine paying one - relatively low - price and having free VoIP calls for years to come? That’s what ooma is trying out with their new phone system. The unit is ooma’s latest release - a so-called free for life unit that promises free calling for as long as the unit works. It was unveiled in New York in early November.

Sound interesting? Well, it’s uber cheap today on Amazon.

Today, Black Friday only, Amazon is offering a ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills for $199.99. That’s $50 off the regular price. So, if you are in the market for VoIP, this could be a good deal to hop on. Ooma offers free domestic calling in the US, along with voicemail and caller ID. International calls are billed as being low-cost.

Internet cafes have been popping up all over Guyana. And at many of those cafes, customers can make cheap or free phone calls via services like Packet8 and Skype.

Well, the phone company and the government aren’t too happy about that. See, internet calls aren’t taxed, so that means the government isn’t making money off this practice. And since the phone company is losing money too, they two paired up to make a big stink.

According to the Associated Press:

Several countries have made moves to block or stifle phone calls over the Internet because they bypass taxation and local phone monopolies. Software that sniffs out phone calls has been used in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and China among others. U.S. regulators prohibit the blocking of Internet calls.

According to Wired:

The in-ear style TuneBuds cost $40, which is half what Apple is asking for its in-ear iPhone cans. More importantly, the Griffin headphones are available to buy, whereas Apple still hasn’t managed to make any of its new mic and remote equipped earbuds available yet. I should know — I’ve been trying to buy some for a month.

Nimbuzz is now available in the Apple iPhone Store. The mobile Instant Messaging and VoIP provider application allows users to call, chat and message for free on nearly every major instant messaging community and social network.

For iPhone users, Nimbuzz is billing this as the first complete messaging product with landscape mode chat.

Hello, Vietnam. Motorola has just deployed its first trial WiMAX network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company (VDC). The company is using the trial network to test the next-gen wireless broadband services in major cities across the country. It will allow VDC to offer more high-demand services like VoIP.

According to Motorola:

The launch of the WiMAX service follows the signing of an agreement between Motorola and VDC to commence a technical and commercial WiMAX trial in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City last year. Under the agreement, Motorola will install WiMAX Diversity Access Points and more than 100 customer premises equipment (CPE) in the nation’s two largest cities.

“Launching the trial network for Vietnam Datacommunications Company is another milestone in Motorola’s long history of leading WiMAX development in the industry,” said Dr. Ray Owen, head of Technology for Asia and general director of Motorola Vietnam. “The WiMAX trial further strengthens our relationship with VDC and offers more choices of broadband access to its subscribers.”

The Motorola WiMAX 802.16e technology will help VDC reach a wider subscriber base.

“Vietnam Datacommunications Company gains competitive advantages by being a pioneer in trialing and launching new WiMAX services, which will allow us to capture market opportunities in the next generation wireless broadband space,” Vu Hoang Lien, CEO, VDC.
