Source: voipcentral.org

In a major breakthrough which could stop growth of illegal VoIP business in the country, the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has seized the illegal VoIP equipment of Tk 5 crore of KDS Group, one of the leading MNCs in the country. It is the biggest capture of illegal VoIP equipment in recent months.

With this latest seizure, it is more or less apparent that illegal VoIP is a common phenomena in Bangladesh, which causes the state exchequer to loss nearly Tk 180 crore annually.

Just a few months ago, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), an anti-crime elite force in Bangladesh seized VoIP equipment from Aktels head office in Bangladesh. The equipments were STMs, softswitches and IP gateways.

Taking hard steps at illegal service providers, the BTRC in collaboration with Rab has been raiding some of the major spots in the country since September 26. They have raided 25 spots and identified four internet service providers who are operating the illegal VoIP business.

They have captured VoIP equipments of KDS at Bayezid Bostami area. However, no one was held in connection with the illegal VoIP business.

Bangladesh to provide VoIP licenses to all providers

Source: voipcentral.org

At the very outset, I can say its a path breaking decision by the Bangladesh government. The decision to grant VoIP licenses to all service providers of the country will not only create conducive atmosphere for the growth of VoIP in Bangladesh but also in other Asian countries, who always have had bitter relation towards this technology.

The Dailystar explains that the seven-member technical committee headed by Saiful Islam has recommended the government to grant VoIP licenses to all the operators including mobile and fixed line phone providers of the country.

The technical committee was constituted last month to review the VoIP market in the light of increasing number of illegal VoIP operators and governments drive to wipe out these service providers.
