ASTLinux, Trixbox, Ferrari, Prius they are not all Apples!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Update:
Kristian used a Toyota Siena in his example but I used Prius as it is closer to my real life situation! I used to like high power cars but one day rented a small Prius car. Although I was little uncomfortable, I was traveling at the same speeds (about 65 mph) but saving a lot of gas (from 14 miles per gallon to 45-50 mile per gallon!).

Kristian of ASTLinux fame has done a very nice article on comparison of ASTLinux and TrixBox. First I was wondering where he was going then it hit me! I think if you know Asterisk and have been plying with it’s numerous incarnations, this is a good read.
Kristian, I like fast big hose power cars with stick shift! But I also liked what you wrote about. I think you hit the nail right on the spot.
"In my VMWare session, it (Trixbox) also uses over 200MB of RAM (doing nothing). AstLinux comes in at about 20MB of RAM (doing nothing). That’s a smaller but still significant factor of 10."

Well that’s why I like ASTLinux for where there is not much room and less resources, Trixbox for people who like mice and nice screens a lot. (these are about 75 present of people ask for)

Here is the artile by Kristian Kielhofner, the creator of ASTLinux!

Disclaimer!
I use both the products! in different situations. Both does what it supposed to do but I will not compare the two. It will be like comparing my Ferrari (only in dreams) to my Prius (real, ‘cos I love this earth). Both are cars! I dream about Ferrari and love and use Prius every day!

ASTLinux 0.4.4 released (Asterisk Linux)

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

If you are wondering what is ASTLinux, You will have to visit ASTLinux site. I will try my best to describe it in a few sentences.
AstLinux is a custom Linux distribution centered around Asterisk, the Open Source PBX. Although Asterisk remains the core focus, other VoIP applications such as OpenSER are also available. AstLinux has many features that make it ideal for embedded and commercial Asterisk based solutions. However, it can be easily configured to adapt to nearly any situation.
AstLinux has been designed with running from Compact Flash memory in mind. However, it can also be installed to a regular hard drive like other distributions. AstLinux currently occupies around 40mb of disk space, so any Compact Flash card (or hard drive) of 64mb or larger will work perfectly.

AstLinux is also the premier Asterisk Live CD. The AstLinux ISO image is very small, yet it includes two AstLinux versions (net4801 and i586), Windows AutoRun support, and of course, el-torrito booting. Try the best asterisk linux distribution today!

ASTLinux documentation is also updated and available from VOIP-INFO.ORG Check out the links. The distribution itself available from Sourceforge, the new home of ASTLinux.
What’s in 0.4.4?
Changes:
- include rhino support
- include misdn support
- include arno’s firewall by default
- update net4801/wrap kernel config to include USB ethernet adapters
- update Asterisk/Zaptel versions (1.2.12.1/1.2.9.1)
- major build system improvements
- include openssl binary in build

VOIP in a stick!

Source: snapvoip.blogspot.com

Gumstix have been a favorite gadget for me for some time. My first experience was with their waysmall 200. I am still busy with it as, there are many a things you could do with these miniature computers. My first successful project was a out door Wireless Antenna /Gateway. Only connection I had was a 20M Ethernet cable from my office to roof top. Anyway that is a subject for another article.
Today we will focus on the new netstix 200xm-cf.(pictured right).
The netstix 200xm-cf computer has received FCC Class A certification for business use. See Part 15, Subpart B, of the Federal Register (CFR 47, Parts 0-19). At 35mm x 103mm [1-3/8 x 4-1/8"], the netstix 200xm-cf comes with 64MB of Ram and 16MB of flash memory, runs at 200MHz and starts at $165 USD each for orders of 1,000 units or more.

Let me give you a little taste before I go on;
PID Uid VmSize Stat Command

2 root SWN [ksoftirqd/0]
3 root SW 4 root SW 9 root SW 20 root SW 36 root SW [pdflush]

507 root 1220 S /usr/sbin/sshd: root@pts/0
509 root 524 S -sh
557 root 368 R ps auwx

Yes this is the "ps auwx" command from the gumstix. Yes I arrived at this via World’s Smallest VoIP PBX page on the AstLinux site.
But the information was too little;
"The Gumstix is a very flexible line of Xscale based SBC’s (single board computers) manufactured by the nice guys over at Gumstix. Work is currently underway to fully integrate this effort with AstLinux. The model I used was the 400xm with the following hardware specs:

- 400mhz Intel XScale Procesor
- 64mb RAM
- 16mb flash
- netCF daughterboard (one CF socket and one 10/100 ethernet)".
But I went to Kristian Kielhofner’s site via the link provided.
That’s where I found all the gems I needed. But now I will have to spend sometime getting these stuff in to my gumstix or a new one.
But voipstix will be a boon for all the road warriors who want to carry voip on a stix.
