Round two Microsoft Skype. Skype saved by the disclaimer bell. Dong !
It feels like we are in round two, when looking at the effects of the Skype Outage. Just read the news-headlines on google news :
It starts with some Skype Users that Don’t Buy Outage Explanation. It is followed by some people who raise doubts : Skype’s Back But For How Long? This is followed by rivals sticking the boot into Skype ” with traditional telcos are gloating over the damage the outage has caused to Skype’s brand and to similar ultra low-cost internet telephony services…” Hm…
Then you got some Vendors Warning on Skype Eavesdropping (maybe they have been reading my blog too much…) But the got a point (or they are making it) when they state that ” Skype is an easy target for hacking and offers a way inside a corporate network, a security company says. Skype is an easy target for hacking ” Security firm says Skype is a business risk PC Advisor | Vendor warns over Skype eavesdropping Computerworld Australia | Vendor warns over Skype eavesdropping Techworld.com.
I think it all started with the rumour (fact or not) on Windows Reboots who Triggered Skype Glitch.
Eitherways the Skype outage news should have a lot of business people thinking twice about deploying a
VoIP (Voice-over-IP) system for their company as mentioned in the article Skype gives VoIP a black eye.
Summary : Skype is not an emergency service, but it is becoming vital. Saved by the disclaimer bell.
Next round. But when the system fails, who pays?
