Om Malik on Broadband.» Harsh Truths about MCI-Qwest Merger
Watch MCI not get sold as a whole, but instead for some of its parts. It’s called a breakup. Their UUNet operation has not been getting the updating it needs, but the contracts it has make it worthwhile to some carrier, maybe a Level3. It still has a paging division, Skytel, but pagers are being hammered by things like Nextel Direct Connect and SMS, so that’s a declining market, but the frequencies are valuable to some forward thinking carriers with services that can run over them, like say real time traffic details. Then there is the phone company. Maybe Vonage with all their cash can think that direction of buying the telco portion. What do they get? Customers….Sales force…..revenue. They also get some infrastructure.
