It is first time that a private operator is allowed to offer ILD services in the Himalayan kingdom. The UTL has a customer base of 100,000 for its CDMA-based networks.

The Nepalese government has licensed both UTL and Nepal Telecom to curb out illegal VoIP services mushrooming in the country. The state exchequer is losing nearly $122 million annual due to illegal ILD call bypass services being provided by VoIP-enabled public phone booths and cyber cafes.

UTL has already started viability study to find out the partners and phone routes to provide IP services to its Nepalese customers. The joint venture company may invest some $2 million to implement the IP technology in the country.
