Indias Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran commenting on IPTV in India said that the first roll-out was likely to happen in June 2006 in Mumbai and Chennai. His optimism comes from the fact that in India convergence is happening on a huge scale with big telecom players like Reliance Infocomm, MTNL and BSNL participating fully on this.
Also, on the issue of the efforts of the government making internet popular for vernacular population, Maran announced that Department of Information Technology (DIT) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) are collaborating on the development of local language browser that will enable users to translate English characters into the vernacular medium of choice.
