Is It or Isn’t It VoIP

The VoIP Weblog has a post about TimeWarner Cable in New York offering Digital Telephony. The headline calls it VoIP.
I’m not so sure, but being in Lyon France right now, it’s a bit hard to get too concerned. Like Cox and a few other cable companies, Digital Telephony has been around for a while. It’s not really VoIP, but ATM over Sonet. There is a big difference, and what the cable operators basically did was create their own telephone networks complete with switching gear that worked like the SS7 networks of the telcos.
At $39.95 a month, it also isn’t a bargain…my bets are it isn’t VoIP, but I may be wrong….
