Chicago Public Schools (CPS) that operates nearly 600 public elementary and high schools in Chicago, Illinois is moving forward to convert the traditional phones lines to VoIP technology. It would be the largest VoIP deployment of any School system in USA.

Robert Runcie, CIO of CPS agrees VoIP will save the school system money in operations by reducing its phone bills. At the same time, the teachers will keep touch with the parents of students via voice mail, caller ID and other enhancements.

Mitel Networks Corp, a leading VoIP solution provider with strong base in Ottawa, Canada will work with the CPS for the VoIP deployment.

The VoIP deployment will ensure public safety authorities with the ability to locate the precise room where each phone call originates as the E911 services facility would be loaded in the VoIP phones.

Don Smith, CEO of Mitel considers this will be the biggest conversion to VoIP to any school system in America with nearly 700 sites, 17,000 Centrex lines and 24,000 phones that Chicago possess.
