Avionica’s satLINK Gains FAA Approval

Source: www.voip-news.com

There’s a new generation of communications that uses VoIP coming to an aircraft near you (unfortunately, it’s for the pilot, not the passenger).

The FAA has approved Avionica Support Group’s satLINK, a satellite-based voice and data communications alternative that uses Iridium Satellite technology. The first satLINK units were installed on Avianca’s Boeing 737, 757 and 767 (and no, Avianca is the correct name of the airline — it’s the second oldest in the world. Funny coincidence that the satLINK is by the eerily similarly spelled Avionica, right?). The unit is also expected to be installed in the Boeing 787 Test Fleet and also in Continental’s Boeing 757 fleet soon.

The Iridium Satellite technology was approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization Council in early January for commercial transoceanic flights.

“We are installing integrated satellite communications systems on aircraft never designed with SATCOM in mind.” said Avionica Vice President Stylian Cocalides. “Changing economics have made aircraft like the 757 transoceanic carriers, and we’re very excited about improving their communications capabilities. It’s all about efficiency and safety.”

Cocalides said that the system features voice communications integrated into the aircraft’s audio system and existing controls.  “Status messages are available on the EICAS system, and the cabin handset option is a uniquely functional feature — it uses VoIP technology over the integrated Cabin Wireless LAN Unit (CWLU).”
